It's to keep the service calls of "my temperature needle is all over the place!" down, no doubt about it. The gauges lie, the OBD-II data stream doesn't. As long as the gauge says 200, just know everything is within normal parameters. The coolant temp gauge also shows fully warmed up *long* before it even gets to the point of opening the thermostat.
