Hey Slick, can you help us out with some info? How many miles on this car? Did you use top tier gas throughout the life of the car and did you ever use any cleaners such as Techron? And what prompted this - were you experiencing any hesitation? Thanks and good luck.

No idea, I bought the car 2nd hand with almost 100k. It has 101k miles on it now. It seems to have been well cared for since most of the parts that tend to break were intact - like the thermostat housing and vent lines. The carbon buildup is actually not terrible either- I’d say only a couple have real big chunks - which means it was most likely not city driven.
im upgrading to the 82mm intake manifold and attempting to upgrade the throttle body if I can find a matching y pipe - for now no. Looking to maximize performance before I tune. I’ve got new cosmo racing ignition coils going in, already added new thermostat and housing, water pump, and vent line.

Here’s a couple pics of the only one that was open - this was the last of 5 that I had worked on

Driver 1

Driver 1

Driver 2 for reference - uncleaned valves above at the time

After these snaps I finished cleaning the last 3 valves best I could - I may go back and use the wire brush again with the gdi cleaner on it.

with those pics - any concerns? Any particles appear to be large enough to be an issue?
can that gdi stuff hydrolock my engine? Should I not use it again on the wire brush? I figure it’s flammable so it should combust.
i ended up using dental scrapers and tweezers to clean the last 3 - May go back and use it to pick out large pieces from the other 4 valves that were closed.

Wow, I am amazed at how dirty this engine looks. Did you try soaking the valves to better loosen all this gunk? I'd definitely try to do that at all costs to clean everything to near new condition.

I don’t want to introduce too much gunk, nor do I want to risk hydrolocking. I may go over the closed valves once more with a wire brush attachment and gdi lightly sprayed on it if no one objects - looks like my valves are closed for the most part - I noticed some of them are ever so slightly open - hence why I don’t want to soak - that’s something I may do once the car is operational and I can spray into the manifold while running - the large chunks are out

Can you see if GDI seeps through closed valve into the cylinder? Spray some on the back of the valve and look with your bore scope inside for wet spot to appear around the valve.

Prefer not to, it’s hard to clear the cylinder out afterwards - I already tried airing out the one with little change

I used the borescope and went through the spark plug hole. Driver 1 in previous post is the one I’m concerned about

I finished cleaning all the other ones - used dental scrape and tweezers to pull out the chunks and finished off with the bristle brushes with some gdi sprayed on it - did a pretty good job of it - not 100% but tons better. Hoping that one cylinder doesn’t have any issues. The gdi spray is good because it doesn’t harden - it stays like an oil - tried spraying it on aluminum and it just remained there even the next day, and it should just burn up (flammable).
