958 CTT- 2012 Exhaust Muffler Rattling Noise -With Video-
Hey Everyone, new to the community & need some advice.
I have a very annoying rattling noise that has recently developed; after some poking around it does not appear to be a heat shield, an exhaust hanger, or anything else contacting the outside of the muffler.
If i push upwards hard on the muffler i can get the noise to quiet down- i think my hand putting pressure on it acts as a dampener.
Has anyone else encountered this before? Any ideas on how to continue troubleshooting? TIA

So I had a very similar issue on my CTT. Cold startup and 60 sec or so of tin can rattle sounds. Would settle down. CPO tried replacing the sport exhaust flaps but didn’t solve it. They went ahead and replaced the entire muffler assembly. Problem solved for now. Bugged the heck out of me. Think a baffle weld came loose inside the muffler. Wonder if you could cut it open on top and reweld it after to fix the loose part. Have to be good weld cause wouldn’t want exhaust leak into cabin. Good luck and let us know what if you find anything.

Time for an update-
I decided that I would give the home repair a shot and see what I was able to accomplish- lots of pics:
Removed the Cat back section of the exhaust- saw horses or a good workbench are a must...lots of time spent hunched over.
Used a sharpie to plot the cuts
Began cutting some select areas
Began cutting some select areas
used some scrap angle steel to make an alignment bracket to assist with re-assembly later. You will really thank yourself for this step should anyone else attempt this.
whallah
This is the a**H*** CO** S***** plate that broke loose and was causing all that racket.
Look close and you can see where the plate was vibrating side to side approximately 1/4" either direction
started welding the baffle plate back in place. Going a bit overkill because I don't want to repeat this repair ever again...
Weld the hell out of it
went ahead and added some weld to the other plates while I was in there...
More weld on the other plate
Welded the center plate some more
more weld
clear pic of the broken weld movement
more weld
clear pic of the broken welds
she not moving again
dog is jealous
Finished product all back together

Happy to say this is back to normal sound and it only cost me a few bucks in stainless welding wire.
I did spring for the expensive stainless wire- my buddies Mig welder was not set up to run shielding gas, and I wanted to maintain a rust free exhaust system.
Here is a link to what i used:
Video of my results... ignore my celebratory woot woots.

Final takeaway- knowing what I do now I wouldn't have cut the whole top of the muffler off, but just re-welded from outside along the baffles... hope this helps someone out in the future. feel free to ask questions.
