is there a way to turn off the interior lights when the rear hatch is open.
going camping and have a tent that fits over the back, so hatch will be open for an extended time.

Yes. Button on the overhead panel. It's in the manual. Varies from model to model.
Also, they will turn of after a "little while" (10 min?) in a 955.
