Default need second cardan shaft at 97k miles. questions

time for a second cardan shaft. first one was replaced under warranty.
i understand that the factory shaft kit will fail again at 60k miles. also, its very expensive.
what is the best after market replacement available?
i heard theres one out there with a lifetime warranty?

There's a few options out there. From the OE Porsche shaft ($1100 or so plus install), after market replacements (one or two piece shafts, prices vary), getting a new bearing installed (a couple hundred, but you send them your shaft and the car is out of service for a couple weeks), the replacement bearing support kit (I think ECS has it, a few hundred), or the "Jimi Fix" (thread on it: https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-...dan-shaft.html)

If your bearing is still good, try the Jimi Fix.

What usually goes is the rubber support around the bearing. Although it's definitely a "MacGyver fix", it works.

I just did it on mine a week ago. I knew the bearing support was tearing when I bought it a year ago, and it lasted until it got really cold a month or so ago. I started hearing the "midget under the center console with a hammer", drove it gently until I had a chance to work on it, and got it done.
The rubber support was torn all the way around. As far as I can tell, the bearing is ok. Works like a charm.

$10 in hose & zip ties, an hour or so under the car.

I had it out with someone on here once, and I ran the numbers based on 1 or 2 dozen failures that were reported by people. Average mileage was over 100K.

Coloradodriveshaft. It's like $400 for a rebuilt unit. Chances are good you won't own the car when the next shaft needs replacing.

if the rubber is still good around the bearing it will prolong its life by lubricating it with grease. I had the same issue with my Touareg. Another example of poor engineering!

I understand everyone talks about the regularity of failure of these cardan shafts, but records on mine shows replacement at 53k miles. I've had it for the last 80-90k miles now sitting at 170k and haven't had to touch it. Neither is it exhibiting signs of failure.
?? Knock on wood I suppose?

I just bought an 09 GTS with 74k, owned it for 1 week when I heard the thump thump thump - lucky me. What a dumb design.

Ordered the vertex kit from amazon yesterday $379 - free/same day shipping, installed last night and repacked the bearing with moly grease. Easy DIY. Jimi fix looks good and much cheaper!

Ummm.. moly grease generally isn't recommended for use with bearings. It's made for use with sliding couplings - where the moly "plates out" on the pressure surfaces providing a cushion against metal to metal contact.

In a bearing it often will plate out on the bearing race - causing the clearances to close up and eventually the bearings will stop rolling and start sliding. Bearing failure occurs shortly afterwards.

What's used on a bearing is bearing grease. A bit of googling will turn up quite a few sources, my favorite is Wurth 3000 - its a very sticky grease meaning it doesn't break down and leave the bearing.

Just a heads up..

in the vertex/esc kit, there are 2 parts. the silver part with rubber supports and a black part with a hole. what is the black part, where does it go?

flex disc (guibo) - mounts to the driveshaft, I can prob climb underneath and take a pic. Mine still looked perfect so I didnt replace at this time.

Ditto on this. I have a local father/son driveshaft shop rebuild it. They do it for 300$ with half a day turnaround time.

I did first shaft at 100k second at 200k (kms). Plus I drive harder then most. To me. Its not a huge deal. If you can re & re the shaft. Chances are there is a reputable shop in your area who have got this rebuild down now.
