Replaced the ML430
Finally replaced the Merc ML430 - but not with a Cayenne.
Reasons why I chose a new Range Rover 4.4 Vogue over Cayenne:
1) Looks, despite trying hard, I just can't get to grips with the looks of this thing, I find it vulgar looking and the use of the 986/996 "face" I find a very cynical marketing tool.
2) It is a complete contradiction, it weighs nearly as much as the RR but asks to be punted around like a sports car this is just plain dangerous, especially to other road users.
3) The ride is choppy (air suspension) even on comfort setting (this is probably a reflection of UK roads)
4) The interior is cheap looking.
5) For the size (weight) of it, there is not much interior space, especially in the boot (trunk)
5) The image which comes with this vehicle (in the UK) is not something I wish to be associated with in an SUV, it is brash, showy, and in yer face - a "V" sign on wheels - I have one of those already should the need arise.

Horses for courses:
I too looked at the RR, and went for the cayenne because:
1) looks, despite trying hard, I cannot get over the fact that the RR looks like a brick, shoving an RR body over a BMW x5 is a cynical marketing ploy.
2) it weighs nearly the same as the RR, can travel off-road like an RR, but can handle like a sports car (ish) if I want it to..
3) ride in the RR is floaty - like being in a boat..
4) interior in the RR is disorganised and has some of the chespest fake wood I have ever seen..
5) The interior of the KN is larger that the X5.. and has minimal intrusion compared to the RR
6) The Image of the new shape RR in the UK is: F**K *FF with a very its aggressive sqaured off "Get of the bl**dy road, don't you know I own it" image.. the KN (out of london) is a rare sight, and most people don't recognise it as a porsche, thus it hasn't really got an image.. most people probably think that it is a santa Fe hyundi and that suits me fine..
as I said horses for courses... hope you enjoy the RR...

your points:
1) You are wrong here, BMW spent big bucks (reputedly the most spent to date by any manufacturer on a new design) designing the RR completely from scratch - the only thing shared with the X5 are the engines.
2) Fair call - but please don't let it be me meeting your understeering 2.5 tonner coming at me round a B road.
3) Fair enough - its just for round town and motorways.
4) Don't agree.
5) Not sure what "intrusion" you mean - X5 is smaller than I think one should get in this size of vehicle.
6) Again, fair call about the RR image, but its more "get out of the way of my carriage" than the KN's "If you don't get out of the way I'm going to blast over you"
I am not flaming the Cayenne - obviously many people like it- I'm just sharing my buying decision (as someone who has owned 8 Porsches and should have been in the market for Porsche's "other" vehicle) in case anyone one from Porsche may be monitoring and are interested.

TB,
Enjoy the 'Rover.... used to have grand times in a friends Defender.
Please though - respect my ability to drive & manouver a Cayenne. I'll fling when I can, and drive slower when I can't.
Also - seems that around 3/4 of Cayenne sales are to (and to be) markets with a bit more room, so to speak - wider roads & "wide open spaces".
Still, the 'RR is a nice piece of work. Enjoy it!

No offense meant.. just an observation that two people can have radically different views of the same two vehicles... Some porsche owners will want the KN because they want an SUV, and porsche makes a damn good one, other Porsche owners ( like yourself) want something different both in image and focus, as an SUV... then there are people like myself who have never owned a porsche, for many reasons and now want a KN.. Personally I wanted an SUV, that handled well as well as reasonable off -road ability.. the fact that its a porsche is really neither here nor there to me...its just that the KN is the best handling SUV out there price for price ( in the UK the V8 sport toureg is around $3000 cheaper by the time you have spec for spec) ...As I said enjoy the RR...

US folk must understand the County Set in the UK is all RR's, it carries a better image and higher snob value than a "German" car.
By the way it has nothing to do with the cars because as most of us know the RR rides like a Caddy.

But the RR is a German car, it took their (BMW) engineering to save it from extinction, because of reliability problems. I experienced this with my 98 4.6.
I took the new RR off-roading in Utah for 3 days (with Land Rover) and it's a fantastic vehicle. It was the best out there (for me) until the Cayenne came along.
The Cayenne suits my driving style more, but if I had needed more room I'd have gone the RR.
It's a win/win not a win/lose.

Nice to see opinions polarising! I hope the RR is a german car, it might be reliable then. I've had RR & Disco and the garage got more use from them than I did. Agree with camcayenne about the image. If wanted serious off road over on-road & towing I'd just have bought another G-wagen - no contest. But the poise & handling of the Cayenne are fine by me - & I'll keep the RS for fun!

Nerarly forgot - re TB993tt's original post, not liking the looks - ok its a personal thing but "...I find a very cynical marketing tool." The M5 looking like a 3 series on steriods would be cynical or carefully creating brand continuity? Am I missing something?

993 front end? Surely you jest.
I have no interest in the 993. Too slow, too cramped. My preference is to my Boxster and upcoming Cayenne, and I can assure you that I never confused either with the bastardized 911, the 993. If you wish a true Carrera, look no further than the early 70's RS & RSR.
Respectfully,
