Default Very close on pulling the trigger on 04 Cayenne Turbo need guidance.

Hey everyone,

So I passed on the last Cayenne (base model) I was looking it and continued my search. This lead me to the current one I'm really close on buying, the only reason I haven't pulled the trigger is there are a couple issues that bother me. It is an 04 and has had the coolant tubes done, it also has new tires. The main issues are there is a "air suspension" failure light and "brake booster" light on. I've read about the brake booster, doesn't seem to be that big of an issue, not sure about the air suspension, can it stay this way or is it a must fix? The other things are it is just a little rougher than I would think a 100K car would be if taken care of properly. The seats have some damage/wear that was repaired but not great. There is an aftermarket toggle switch on the dash, who knows what that was for. The DVD player is smashed and not working. It ran and drove really nice though, and OMG the POWAHHHHHHH! I didn't think a heavy SUV could go this fast, no joke, wow.

Anyway the guy says it is a "twin turbo" vs just a turbo, any way to find out for sure, I thought it was just the turbo version. We talked a long time yesterday and haggled a bit and to my surprise he came down to 11,000 (didn't ask him to he just said he would when I asked "best you can do on it?") which seems like a steal accept for the nagging issues making me pause and not be sure. Any advice would be helpful. Should I walk, should I jump on it, etc.? I'm planning on getting a PPI done as well but thought I'd start here. I'm going to look at it again this afternoon, any answers are MUCH appreciated!

All turbos are twin turbos.

You can't let the price fool you into thinking you're getting a good deal. In the Porsche world, especially with complicated cars like the Cayenne, you either pay now or pay later. If you can't afford a well sorted, pristine, higher mileage $16K Cayenne, then you can't afford one for $11K. This car, while reliable, can quickly rack up a few thousand in repairs.

Nobody can tell you what's wrong with the air suspension without knowing the exact code.

My car has 120K on it, and the inside looks like new. The only reason I could see for a rough interior is from an owner who beat on it. In my experience, a car that is in questionable condition from a looks standpoint, is also probably in questionable condition from a mechanical standpoint.

Cayennes of all variants are cheap enough now that the cost of owning it will far exceed the cost you paid for it. You would be much better off financing a slightly more expensive car, than financing a slightly cheaper car that you'll also pay a few thousand out of pocket to get it fixed and keep it on the road.

I walked away from more than a few Cayenne's that you couldn't give me. Simply because the cost to get them up to speed far exceeded the cost of just buying a well sorted one for a few grand more.

Well said...also I bought my 2nd Ceyenne, being my 1st TT and paid a premium because the PO was super amazing with getting all the issues sorted out before IE: coolant pipes and shaft replaced and had all records...I just felt it's better to pay for it already done and my interior is meticulously clean as well.
Mine had 112K miles ...I love it over the C-S I had before...Best of luck...I also looked for 8 months to find her up in Wisc.

Very wise info here ^^^. I have never been impressed with the leather quality of newer Porsche's and they just seem to show more wear when compared to the cars from the 80s and 90s.

You didn't mention how many miles were on the car you were looking at but if its just over 100k it sounds like an extremely good deal. Almost too good! Definitely get it check out before you buy!

Thanks for the replies. I can certainly afford repairs but like finding great deals that need a little fix up, kind of a hobby which is why I'm looking at this one vs one you mentioned that would be more expensive. As a matter of principal though, I agree, it would be better to get one with no issues and pay more than to pay an arm and a leg getting a worse one up to snuff. The only codes I pulled off the car with my scanner were:

P0243: Turbocharger/supercharger wastegate solenoid
P1431: Manufacturer control

Haven't done any research on them yet, I'm about too now. Anyone have any info on what could be the cause? Also as far as "the codes" on the suspension I'm not sure where to pull that from, the OBDII port just gave me the above codes, that's it. The main display says "air suspension fault" and "brake booster fault" or something like that. Are the codes associated with that scanned differently than with an OBDII scanner?

The "folded leather" seats seem to hold up better than the standard seats. My 04 in Palm green leather still looks really good. The tan and grey interiors especially seem to wear badly in standard leather.

I caution OP to hold out if he can or increase the search radius. Remember you are going to get used to the power and then you are stuck with that specific car. Make it count.

Thanks for that, my scanner just said "manufacturers code".

I understand what you are saying, and if I was looking for just the right car for myself I agree 100%. I like finding a deal and doing a little fix up, which is why every car will need something I'm looking at. The key is to keep it "little" fix up and not "lose your ***" fix up lol. I called my Porsche specialist who said if I bring it by tomorrow he will scan the air suspension fault code and tell me what it says I'd be looking at so I'm going to do that. I'm assuming there is a special scanner that scans these types of codes that my OBDII will not read? Also the carfax came back with one minor accident, hit a deer and had to be towed. It also was serviced fairly regularly at 15K, 20K, 56K, 68K, 73K, 75K, 87K, 90K and 91K with the last string being mostly oil / filter changes. Not sure why they are that close together except if someone put the mileage in wrong at the oil change place maybe. And to who asked the car has just over 100K on it.

Periodically, there are those 'special situations' deals......but the vast majority of the time, you truly do get what you pay for.

I hear that, I keep going back and forth on it, hopefully I'll have a good gut feeling of what to do by tomorrow.
