Default Towing w 04 CTT vs 2011 C S

Towing w 04 CTT vs 2011 C S

I love my 04 Cayenne Turbo but thinking of getting a newer 2011 Cayenne S. Towing is easy with the 04 Turbo with air suspension. Since I'm unlikely to find a 2011 S with air suspension can I still tow my enclosed 20' race trailer or will I need to do something special like those suspension leveling bars?
Thanks for any input
Rick

You should sell me the 04 CTT and enclosed trailer to help fund your new Cayenne.

Glad to hear you've had success with towing the enclosed trailer. I want to go that route with a CTT and my 996. Are you using an all aluminum trailer or one with wood? I feel like you would miss the torque if you got a non turbo.

Tow a 6800 lb dual axle boat and trailer combo with surge brakes no problem with a '11 C S with no air suspension. No hills and limited freeway, but have gone probably 600+ miles without issue to date.

@ rhart :: My understanding is that the leveling bars are a good idea if you tow through windy areas (mountain passes, etc). I've been a passenger in tow vehicles with leveling bar hookups on the tongue of a large enclosed trailer (w/ 2 cars loaded), and it was very stable. I have a lot of experience towing a boat (surge brakes), but not yet with electric brakes & will soon be deciding whether I need a Elec Brake Controller ( like a Tekonsha) P3 or RF) for that activity ( on my 958CTT).

bweSteve.... the electric brake controller isn't optional... you need it if your trailer has electric brakes and you want them to work right. Not a big investment... but don't look at it as a nice-to-have; it's a must-have.

Yes, Thank You BE455,.. in fact you (+ "turbosporsche" & “stronbl”) were all a BIG help over on this other thread…
https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-...r-cayenne.html

Although Turbosporsche never did report back on how his electrical testing went. He was going to test his pin-outs, and see if he is getting a variable voltage to the trailer brake pin. You had said you thought it was a total 12v signal EVERY time you step on the brakes. So I never heard the final resolve over there.

Through help from stronbl, I WAS indeed able to find the wiring (4 pin plug) in a "gray foam cover” ( as described by stronbl in post #20 under that thread) under my dash. Yes I have the factory tow hitch package option 1D6 (factory wiring, etc).

The under dash 4 pin plug is wired with the following:

- 3 thick wires in the following colors:
o Solid BLUE
o Solid BROWN
o RED with White Stripe
- 4th wire is a thinner BLACK with small Red Stripe

None of my local Indy, nor Dealer have knowledge about this wiring in the 958 ( go figure), so I plan to soon read up on eTrailer doc’s, and figure out how to hook it up myself. If all looks straight fwd, I plan to purchase a Tekonsha P3. I still have 2 months before I need it.

Thanks again for your help.

@ rhart - Hoping this continued discussion on ebrake controller is still within your interest for this thread ( apologies if not).

I just priced out the parts needed ( as shown on the eTrailer instructions)
https://www.etrailer.com/faq-tb-09-0021-Tekonsha.aspx

The VW connector part # 1J0-972-782 - is $9 at my local VW dealer

The wire with blade connector on the end, part # 000-979-228E - is $19 each (2 needed) - Ouch!

alas, I will not be spending $36 ($19*2) JUST to get the blade terminated wires. I can build this from my own garage spare parts.

Here are a couple pics of the resulting wiring harness built ( w/ the supplied Tekonsha P3 wires, to the VW connector) ....

So, if I have an 06' CTTS with a trailer package installed from dealer (I don't think they came from Porsche with them added but not clear on this) will I have the wire available under the dash also for the break controller?

Great thread, thanks for all the input.

Kufatec has the male connectors (versus pigtails from VW). I ordered them, crimped them directly to the Prodigy harness wires rather than soldered VW pigtails to Prodigy pigtails, a little neater. Their part number 39953. I could not find these standard AMP Timer male connectors anywhere else in the US: not from Wurth, Digikey, etc.

I know this is a way old thread...do you happen to have any of these? It looks like you have to buy a 50 pack -- could pay you a few bucks to ship 8-10 or so if willing...thanks!
