Default Rear-mounted full size spare: am I crazy?

All I read about the rear-mounted full-size spare kit is about how much of a pain it is. Am I crazy for thinking that it is kind of cool, and how much I want to have a real spare?

I plan on using an 04-05 CTT for towing and light off-roading. Both situations would leave me completely stranded if I had a flat and no "real" spare. The other option I considered was buying a 5th full size wheel and tire from a junkyard like DC Auto and just strapping it to the roof rack when going offroad or towing. The main problem with that is that I can't leave it up there all the time, because someone would steal it. I'm tall and young and don't mind lifting it on and off of the roof rack.

I've only seen one FS with the full size spare, and I'm not sure it has the tow kit, which would be a deal-breaker.

I wish I had the full size spare. You're not alone

I hear you. I have considered adding an expedition rack and carrying a full-sized spare and off-road type jack up there when I am headed offroad. I was out in really deep snow a couple of weeks ago and had to retreat because I didn't have a winch.

There are some interesting "expedition" builds of Touregs that I have seen, but there none that I have seen done to a Cayenne, saving that Transiberia...

Cheers,
Tom

If I get one, I'm definitely going to check out a roof mounted spare, even if I have to fabricate one (I'm an engineer). I want to develop a good winch solution too.

There is a really good winch solution for the Toureg which I have been considering for my CTT. My only concern is the effect it would have on the cooling of the Cayenne as it blocks about half of the center air intake...

I think the spare is cool and have seen several cayennes with it for sale this year. However, I use my trunk all the time and having to hinge open the tire before opening the hatch seems like it would get really old.

I do imagine it would get to be a big pain. I called a guy selling a CTT for $16k (80k miles) and said he couldn't get anyone to buy the thing because of the spare.

Blocking the intercooler and rads on a CTT would be a big concern of mine too.
