Oil filter question

Oil filter question
Hey, guys. Any tips or tricks to removing the oil filter without getting completely soaked with oil? I used a Mity Vac, removed the oil, then got underneath and removed the filter. I used a zip lock bag as suggested by a member here, but damn, a ton of oil poured out (well, maybe not a ton, but enough to make a mess). The only thing I can think to do is lay out a large drop cloth and hope for the best, but I'm looking for a simpler and more efficacious solution.

When you removed the oil filter, did you remove the filter drain plug first?

Draining via the drain plug will not make the filter drain, but it will help you clear any potential deposits sitting on the bottom of the oil pan. The mityvac may or may not pick up those deposits. When you removed the oil filter, did you remove the filter drain plug first?

I read about that, but thought it did not apply to my V6 base Cayenne. Also, the manual says 7.3 (or thereabouts) quarts with filter change. That's how much came out and that's how much I put back in...

Not sure which model we are talking about, but the official procedure on my 958 diesel (filter on top) is to drain the oil and while its draining partially open the filter housing. After the oil has stopped, then you remove the cap and filter.
Doing that I haven't had a mess to deal with.
If you are using an extractor I'd suck about half out, crack the filter so it can drain, and then suck the rest out.

Make sure to use the little Allen plug to drain the filter first, that gets out most of it, then I used one if those flexible funnel thingies to catch any extra that came out. Don't remember making any mess at all.

I'm just learning about the purpose of that Allen bolt via this thread. Mine didn't want to budge, though...
