Default Steering Column Groan After 45 mins?

Hi all

After 45 mins to an hour of driving I'm experiencing a groan from the steering column when slowing to around 15 to 20 mph and turning into a corner. No noise if driving straight or driving at speed with only light turning of the steering wheel, it happens when turning 90 degrees or so for left turns (UK car) but it will be fine on my commute to the office as it only takes 30 mins.

If I drive for longer the noise will come.

Its a 2005 CTT with 60k miles and has Servotronic.

Anyone know what's up, PAS fluid I hope lol.

Thanks

Carl

It's a turbo. It's groaning because you're only going 15 to 20 mph...
(sorry, couldn't let that one go by)

If full lock sounds nornal to me . Try changing fluid. I would be annoyed if groaning happened with any degree of turning. Mike

Mine just started groaning a bit about two weeks ago, it also squeaks or chirps for lack of a better description, not sure why, it happens at very odd times, sometimes when I first take off, sometimes 3 hours into the trip.

My wife's 06 S does this too. First noticed in a parking lot, so I drained and refilled the power steering reservoir. I got an improvement, but still groans on occasion.

I sold the 955 because of that problem and after a few "other" cars am now in a 958 CTT and guess what, same groan at the same speed and steering position, only thing thats the same is Servotronic.

The 958 guys dont know, Porsche doesnt know yet, WTF, my 958 was very close to £100k here in the UK and it groans like that, very disappointed.

Anyone figure this out?

Mine groans only when not moving, and turning the wheel. Under CPO it got a new steering rack, a new power steering pump, and new tie-rod ends. It still does it. I'm pretty convinced it because some bushings somewhere in the front end have softened up a bit, and are allowing a resonance to happen. FWIW - it won't do it if there is sand on the pavement surface, so it's not an active component causing it (fluid, rack, pump).. it's something in some front end component mounting.

Been doing it for 4 years now - hasn't changed - doesn't effect handling that I can see so I've learned to ignore it.

My wife's 958 V6 groans at low speed during 90 degrees turns. I hear it most often when driving around in a parking lot. The car just got a new front differential (CPO warranty). The noise is now not as strong but still present. I am going to live with it.

I saw some service bulletin on this.....it was a lubrication issue in the steering column. The solution was to remove the steering wheel and use some silicone grease on one of the bushings.

My '05 955 does this occasionally. The sound is pretty light, and you can almost feel a very slight vibration in the steering wheel. It comes and goes, though, so mainly I've just ignored it.....

Now if I could just get the housing for the front parking assist lights to stop rattling........
