Default Back Up Camera??

I didn't get the back up camera option on my 14 GTS, because it was expensive and I didn't think I would need it.

Now having owned the vehicle for a couple of months I'm still not comfortable backing up. I'm not sure why this is, I don't have trouble backing other vehicles. One source of concern is scrapping my expensive wheels on the curb while parallel parking, which the camera can't help with, but the main concern is I can't get a feel for where the back of the car is when backing up with something behind that I could run into, so I tend to error in favor of not hitting and end up with 2 attempts at times that should have been easy in 1 to back up and then pull away.

So my question is how well does the factory camera work and is there a way to integrate an aftermarket on into the system and use the stock screen?

It certainly can as you can see exactly where the kerb is as you turn in.

Is there more than 1 camera? If 1 is facing backwards and wide angle I can't see how it could show the curb by your tire very well. You would almost need one over each wheel well as well.

But like I said, I have never lived with the option. I used it once on a test drive Cayenne and with no previous experience with how to process what I was seeing it seems pretty limited in function.

the screen displays directional lines you can use to guide you but I tend to use the side mirror when parallel parking.

the cayenne is the largest car Ive owned and backing up can be hard especially when you jump from a 911. The challenge w/ the cayenne , esp 958, are the large blind spots. So yeah, its expensive, but i find it helpful. The resolution is poor however.

Having come from another SUV, the backup camera and parking sensors are the first options I checked when ordering a new car.

Obama and the auto industry have been going back and forth on making back up cameras mandatory on all new cars. I think it has been pushed out to 2015, which I think is a shame.

I was too cheap to get the factory backup camera but have since installed a wireless backup camera and mirror from Tadibrothers. The biggest challenge for me was tearing the overhead console open to install the receiver and to connect the power I tapped from the passenger fuse box. There are a number of good guides on tearing the rear door panel open enough to place the receiver and tap the power. I did take picture of the install and plan to post eventually as a DIY. Even though I did somewhat regret not getting the factory install I now can put a wireless camera on the back of my stock trailer and see behind the trailer. No way to do that with the factory. I like the mirror with the tadi unit, good size screen and looks okay over the factory mirror. Just another option for people that want to see behind their trailer for backing etc.

Here is my basic wireless setup. The mirror receiver has input for two cameras. The green wire is power from the passenger side fuse box on a switched fuse. I ran it up the "A" pillar and along the headrest. I used Velcro to hold the transmitter in the overhead and rear door lid. I grounded as shown in the overhead. Took a few hours at most.
