Yea Orantes, I only expect to hopefully go a few more miles than you when it's time for my third, hopefully more like 200,000K, 120K miles. I don't drive my CTTS like I stole it but I do occasionally do some full throttle jaunts, that's why I got a CTTS. No standing starts, no towing. I'm just thankful that I have a shop, a lift, lots of tools, etc... so that I can do the install myself which offsets the cost greatly compared to a dealer job (full labor, full parts cost). For the average Joe the cost of replacement at the dealer is ridiculous considering that he will also have to pay a ridiculous cost for the Coolant pipes and install. What about the dealer price for the Air Suspension pump if you have to go that route (which everyone with Air Suspension will prior to 100K, and most likely around the time of the Cardan). Between the three items mentioned here we are already knocking on a $10K bill plus the time you are without your Pig. Thankfully most of us on this list are DIY's. But yes, even with it's faults which are many, the engine, interior, and handling I'm in love with.

WTF are you talking about? These almost never fail!
The only issue that I've ever seen was the faulty piston ring on the 04s only. Fairly cheap 20 min fix and then they never need it again.(which is why you never see it mentioned since they have probably all been upgraded at this point)

Well I guess the many that I saw come through Barrier Porsche/Audi up here in Washington must have been different including the pump on my '06 CTTS. You are correct about the rubber piston ring being the usual failure though. If you don't DIY and get aftermarket or VW parts then you are in for a Wopping bill as Porsche only replaces the pumps as a unit and will not sell you the parts. If you search this forum and Renntech you will find many hits on Air Suspension faults which many of them turned out to be just the pump. Most just get the kit for the Touareg from VW but there are aftermarket Ebay options around now.
VW actually put out a TSB for rebuilding the pump (same pump on Touareg except for one port, goes to the tire filling connection ) but Porsche didn't since they only replaced the pumps as a unit.

Did you happen to notice how old those threads are though? And what model year they are on?
04 was the affected year. There were almost more 04s than 05+06 combined. So simply due to the math any mechanic will see 2x as many 04s for a fault than 05/06.
Just saying that its one of those things that *was* an issue and got cured on most vehicles. Otherwise it's pretty rare, not inevitable like you make it sound.

Having previously worked for a large Porsche/Audi dealer for years I know how common it was. Maybe more in '04 but I can't say, the '03~'04 my year are a year or more older than the later ones so I'm not sure if it was a fix. A version of the same Wabco (manufacturer) is used on the Touareg, Audi A8, Phaeton, Bentley.... They almost all have the piston ring/seal failure, rarely does the electric motor fail. It's sad that many have been raped at the dealer for $1500~$2000 for the part (available after market for $800 and up) when a rebuild kit ($25~$110) is available. I still keep in touch with some of my Porsche dealer friends (still need parts for 4 different cars) and it isn't anything as common as the Cardan Shaft or Coolant pipes but they do fail. Many were mis-diagnosed as pump temp sensor and other faults that will sometimes register when it is just the piston ring/seal.

Drifting
I put in the aluminum version of the lindsey racing drive shaft last week. Has been working very well. Had it up to 125 mph and it stayed smooth. Got rid of a slight vibration I was having in the 75 mph range. The rubber on the original had tears and cracks so wasn't long for this world. Easy install.

mtnrat, please give us an update in a few months just to keep this thread going. I have a lot of respect for Lindsey racing and I doubt they would sell a bad product, I know they don't make the shaft but a the manufacturer is a well respected company that only builds drive shafts so they must know a thing or two about driveshafts.

Burning Brakes
I @ 160k plus on my 2006.........first cardan shaft went @ 65k second @ 150k....I am not scared.
It looks like quality and for a certain niche of Cayenne buyers that will come to love the 955.

Sorry to bring this back, but what's the latest recommendation?
(a) Go with the rebuilt ones from Vertex?
(b) Get the new clamp for the center bearing area?
(c) Go with the single piece from lindsey racing?
