Default 5mm Spacers. Why?

I was looking over my GTS build list last night and noticed that the 5mm wheel spacer option for $500.

[ Includes wheel nuts and theft protection. Not in conjunction with snow chains. For Cayenne GTS: Only in conjunction with 21-inch wheels. Not compatible with Cayenne GTS standard wheel.]

I got the 21" wheels but may want to run some 20s with allseason or snow tires and in an extreme case maybe run chains.

So what is the deal with this 1/4 inch spacer? Does it go behind the brake hat or is it in front and removable like other after market spacers I have seen? 1/4 inch seems insignificant unless you are purpossly trying to clear bigger than stock brake calipers or run a wheel with more offset. Neither of which would apply to a stock Cayenne.

Why would I want this 5mm kit? Other than for the theft protection, which I assume is 4 special bolts or nuts that need a key. I can buy something like that for very little.

5mm is less then 0.20 inches. totally not worth it. Get wider tires instead.
you already get the "special" bolts. The key is in the trunk.

Save yourself some money and get after mkts 7mm for like $130.

I was just rounding up to 1/4 inch. That's good to know about the bolts coming stock. What I'm really asking is why would you want a little 5mm spacer unless you were trying to fit something that needed the extra 5mm for clearance? I've seen these 5mm spacers on every Porsche options list I can remember. They seem to think it's a big deal. Usually they don't cost $500 however.

I already ordered the GTS btw and didn't get this option. I would just like to understand it.

i put 20mm's on my cayenne all around and still was not very noticeable...

i bought the "wider fender flares" thinking they would be sticking out, but ended up removing the flares because the 20mm looked best w/o them.

i still have a set w/ lugs if interested off my second cayenne...

with 20mm spacer:

On my '06 CTTS I'm running 5mm H&R spacers all around with my BBS 21's as the need more offset to clear the CTTS brake calipers. Stock 20" sport Technos clear the brake calipers fine. I did get 5mm longer wheel bolts to go with the spacers.

well the cynic in me says marketing and for profit.

theres no clearance issues not even w/ 18s, 19s, and 20's.

I think the idea is to help fill out the fender flares, however $500 is ridiculous. There should be no fitment issues without the spacers.

Just bought a 2013 CTT and in the process of adding a Sport Design Kit to get the GTS look. I'm waiting to see what to do spacer wise with my 21" sport wheels to see if they would look better pushed out more. Most threads seem to recommend 15m front and 20m rear. Would I be able to put snow chains on with spacers or would it be better to just add wider tires? I do 3-4 ski trips a year and even though I've never had to chain up in a 4x4(checkpoints only ask if I carry chains) it would be nice to know in advance. Also wanted to know how the CTT handles with all season tires in the snow?
Thx

All season=no season. Add snow tires if you frequently are going on ski trips, tire chains are a last ditch alternative and can do a lot of damage if not installed correctly. Best bet for winter tires are something narrower.

Live in LA so will only see snow in Tahoe 2-3 times a year so not worth getting snow tires.
Anyone have advice on spacers? Size, type etc?

I used some Burger Tuning spacers on the BMW E60 I used to have. They were $99 including the lugs, and it was hard to see where spending any more money would have delivered a better product. Maybe it would be possible to get lighter ones that were made from some unobtanium alloy or something, but these were fine.

Burger Tuning appears to be a BMW specialist, so not a solution for Porsche needs - but I am sure you can find some well manufactured spacers aftermarket.
