When did the V8s become safe and sound?
Hi,
I've been looking at early cayenne S's and a lot of them have had the engine replaced, usually around 60k miles.
Rumors say that the engines were improved at some stage, around 2009. Is this the case?
How can I determine if the replacement engine is "good" or just as prone to failure as the original one?
For example, is there an engine number I can check for this?
I'm only familiar with 928s, and there are more than 20 variations of the M28 engine. Is this the case for the cayenne too?

As usual, many/most rumors are greatly exaggerated at best. Some had problems, most do not. Have anything you are preparing to buy checked out by a dealer prior to buying. Then, drive it like you stole it.

Mine is a 2004S with 111000 miles. Ordered cooling pipe kit for peace of mind. Engine does not use any oil and so long as I treat the car with respect and regularly maintain it I do not have any issues. Love the car. It is a well designed sports SUV with power and comfort.
