Cool

For trailers with LED lighting, there is a special plug for P.A.V. vehicles with 7 to 4 and 7 to 5 choices. Can be ordered through eTrailer.com (no affiliation). http://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Tow-R...Fejm7Aodd1sAjQ

I tow a 22 foot boat on an aluminum double axel trailer and together they weigh 5400 LBS. No problem.

But, you are looking at towing a much longer trailer with weighing close to the limits for the Cayenne. Sadly, I would search for a much larger tow vehicle in your case.

Current Cayenne (92A) with towing package and trailer module as of 2011, either factory or retrofit, works fine with LED lights - no LED adapter needed. This is a corrected design from earlier models. It may also be ok for 2010, but my TSB only references 2011 and newer.

My Featherlite trailer has LED lights all around and no issues with my hookup or brake controller. You will need a 7-way to 4-way adapter if you tow a trailer with only 4-way plug.

2011 Cayenne S with no air suspension and no PASM here. Towing an enclosed Trailex 2300lbs. I think it's 22ft. Car and gear 3000lbs. No issues at all. The side mirrors recommended by f4 plt are excellent. Available on Amazon: http://www.milenco.com/products/mirr...-towing-mirror

No issues with LED lights. I wired a Prodigy brake controller per instructions of a fellow Rennlister by making a harness specific for the Cayenne and installing a relay in place of the brake switch. Works perfectly:

Corrected design?

How can you correct something that was never broken in the first place?

I have no choice but to contact PCNA Legal (I just happen to have the direct phone number) and report this libelous public post...

All that said for trailers and loads of around 6000 the Cayenne is a great towing vehicle
The safety factor is built into the manufactures maximum gross weight. Although it helps you sleep at night, the reality is the safety margin is there and you can tow max weight all day long. As long as the trailer is maintained in a good state.

Of course this is from reputable manufactures that have actual engineers on staff....

Question Question about towing

Good thread and information.

I have a 2011 Cayenne S and tow a 20' boat, roughly 4500# boat and trailer together. I have only towed it a couple of time as it's new to me (boat and trailer).

My question is, is there advise on whether to leave the transmission in auto mode or is it better to do manual shifting? Is there advice if in manual mode as to max gear?

Years ago I think I may have burned out a transmission in a 2001 Dodge Durango by not turning off OD which may have caused too much up and down shifting and wear and tear on the transmission. I don't want this to happen again and am looking for general advice from folks who have experience and knowledge towing with the Cayenne. There's no OD to shut off when towing (some vehicles call it tow/haul).

Thanks,
-Eric

I have a Cayenne S and have towed cars over very long distances. I tow around 5500 Lbs loaded, and often for 2500 miles a trip. It is quite stable and I now have about 12000 miles on the Cayenne. I have a brake controller fitted of course so I can adjust the bias as needed....

The advice I was given on this forum was to put it in sport mode, which starts off the vehicle in first gear. This has worked very well for me (20' enclosed with additional 5' V nose).

You make an interesting point about sport mode. I can recall a few times when towing my enclosed trailer & car, my Cayenne diesel would not down shift to 1st unless I was completely stopped. For example when I slowed at a traffic light to around 5 mph, then the light changed from red to green, I would accelerate back up to speed, the CD started from 2nd gear. There was never a problem as the torque was sufficient to compensate for the gearing. But I wonder if it placed an un-needed stress on the tiptronic. I'll watch it more carefully and maybe downshift manually to 1st gear from now on.

I've also treated the sport button as the tow/haul button on other trucks. Starts in 1st for some excellent torque, and at trailering speeds, never shifts into 6th. (04 tt)

Default Thanks

I wondered if Sport Mode would be better. Thanks for the replies, I will do that, it does make sense.

I have towed my 20' Aluma tilt trailer hauling my 2013 C2 Carrera with my wife's 2016 Base Cayenne and it tows very well, got 15-16 mpg and works with the new LED lights without an issue. FYI
