Default 7-pin trailer wiring advice

I bought a 2006 S with the class 3 hitch. I will be towing a race car on an open trailer. I need to get it wired up and this is not something I want to do. I like to wrench but my understanding of electrical is only that it can hurt. I see the plugs for under $30 but want to know if you can suggest what I should pay for install and potentially who to have do the work. I am tempted to take it to the folks that sell trailers.

It has the Porsche OEM trailer hitch? If so, installing the 7 pin socket is a breeze, takes all of 5 min. Search for threads on Pollak socket here on the forum, plenty of threads with pictures. You could also go to a VW dealer for the one that would fit a Toureg (sp?).

Does your trailer have LED lights? If so, that's another issue but there is a work-around.

Default Led trailer lights

What is the workaround for LED lights? Is it a load equalizer?

There is a special 7 pin to 4 (or 5) pin adapter for the BMW, Porsche, Audi vehicles for use with LED lights. I got the 7 to 5 but cut off the last pin and then had to remove the center (large) round pin on the other end to get it to work with U-Haul trailers but it works fine.

Nope. this is the one I got but I had to do the modifications I mentioned above to make it work. I was told there was another one (from Valley) that didn't need modification but I couldn't find it.

It has to be the adapter for the LED lights, when you take it apart you will see the resistors inside the adapter.

Thanks. I got down and looked around again and this time on the left side I see a little cover plate. I missed that the first time. Thought I was going to have to splice in wires. So you recommend just buying tourag plug not something from advancedauto parts? As far as trailer I will rent u-haul for now until I find my trailer. So assuming the 7-pin is what's needed for the u-haul trailer.

Hey.... sorry to hijack here. One more question. Do LED traiker lights not work without this? OR do they just blink fast? If its fast, I can deal with that, im a mile from the boat launch
