Probably the most important point here.

I always get a kick out of seeing the low slung detector half pointed to the sky

I've alway wanted to do a stealth/remote mount but can't find a more practical space for the display than up by the rear view mirror where you end u looking naturally anyway.

You could do one of the rear view mirror integrated displays... Those look great.

Except that you still need to mount the unit itself up high and forward. So it typically ends up behind/above the mirror anyway.

I've seen people mount the unit in the rear 3rd brake light housing on a sports car and use the mirror. That is kinda cool.

I would probably go with the bumper mounted units to go with a totally stealthy installation.

The problem with the bumper mounted systems is that they tend to get worse reception than a (high) windshield mounted unit. Probably not as big of an issue on a P!g, but it's noticeable in something like a 911. Additionally all the ones I've seen first hand use cheap poorly insulated wiring for their sensors which allows for interference and lots of false alarms.

I love that mount in the center console, Gnat. What did you use to mount the remote sensor above the mirror??

That's the rub, there is no "remote sensor" you still have to mount the whole unit up above the mirror to have proper reception.

So instead of looking out the windshield and having the unit in your peripheral vision, you actually have to take your eyes off the road to look down at that display.

Looks cool though.

That's my take. I saw GNAT's installation, and thought -- I want one -- went to Valentine's web site, to better understand the remote display, how it hooks up, and concluded it's too much work for me to get a nice, clean functional installation, and there's the issue of mounting the V1 device -- wiring everything up -- beyond my pay grade; I'm into oil / filter changes -- that's about it -- didn't do the cooling pipes on previous 'C' -- left that to professionals -- no brake jobs / drive shafts / horns / hatch struts either. I do own and use a Durametric though.

I actually find it less of a distraction/danger than when I ran without the remote display for the first few months before I decided/implemented where I wanted the RD. For me the location of the V1 (I mount on the passenger side out of habit) is out of the way and way out of my line of sight.

Unfortunately the sun hits it pretty bad on the console so other than a nicely placed mute button it's otherwise useless much of the time...

A quick question....I am using a cheap COBRA for around $50 which I picked from the USA and it was working beautifully....it was a 360 degree lasar and radar....and the police used laser here....I mean when you were hit the La light would start flashing, but now since a few months it doesnt pick up the police laser anymore....the cops seem to have changed their units......and I have 3 of the COBRAS and all dont pick up the lasers anymore. Any ideas???

Between 3 cars I have the V1, Escort 9500IX, and dealer installed K40 front/rear recievers w/Laser Jammer. Hard pick between the V1 & newer 9500IX w/GPS. The 9500IX has better filters and the GPS for a lot less false alarms. They both have about the same range but the Arrows & Signals counter on the V1 are nice to have. More rural it would be a toss-up, maybe leaning to the Escort, more country I would take the V1. Forget about the overpriced K40, it's garbage by comparison and twice the price. I do see that Escort just came out with another new detector they are calling it their best, it's called the Passport Max.

I'm a V1 guy for a long time. most of our radar cars use Ka-Narrow band radars which have an extremly low power output and V1 has superior range with them. it saves my *** every day in all of my cars, saved me A LOT of money & my drivers license at least a 100x.
a couple of my friends have a bumper mounted V1 (there's a Czech company that does those custom installs - http://www.cz-antiradary.cz/content/24-video-baner see the vids) custom kit and that thing has an unbelievable range and sensitivity. I'm contemplating to have this mounted as well.
