08 GTS or 08 Turbo?

08 GTS or 08 Turbo?
For essentially the same money I can either get an 08 GTS (non-CPO) with 43,000 miles on it from a Porsche Dealer OR an 08 TT with 55,000 from a local dealer (non-Porsche).
The GTS has PCM, Moonroof, Bi-Xenon, Bose, Light comfort. Clean carfax.
The local dealer got the TT from an auction. Why? According to the Sales Manager, the GM is a bit of a car guy and likes to have a few high end pre-owned on their lot. (They are a Volkswagen dealer). They claim that they stand behind the vehicle 100% and that their guys have gone through it extensively. Outside of the panoramic sunroof and the trailer hitch, they are really at a loss to tell me what else it has.
I am intrigued by the deal on the TT, but I am also hesitant because of its history.
Thoughts??

I love my turbo!!! Keep in mind that those panoramic sunroofs are know to have problems and are VERY expensive to fix. Other than that not much goes wrong with the turbo. I would get the turbo PPI before even thinking of purchasing it. Don't take VWs word for it. Go turbo it will be the best decision you make.

Run a carfax or autocheck on the auction car. Just because it has been at auction does not necessarily mean it is a bad vehcile or has a suspicious past. It just means that the last owner decided they did not have the time/expertise/infrastructure/advertising/etc. to sell it themselves. Many good cars are traded in at off-brand dealerships who send them immediately to auction because it is not their thing.
Carfax or Autocheck will tell you how many previous owners it has had, and where it has been registered previously (has it spent any time in the rust belt or desert southwest?).
Either way, get a PPI on the one you like best and have fun!

Thanks everyone for the input.
According to the Carfax the GTS has had 2 owners. It has always been somewhere in the Northeast.
On the Turbo, the Carfax says that it also had two owners prior to going to auction and ending up in the Northeast. The first owner was in Missouri. The 2nd was in Florida. It then ended up in an Auto Auction in Pennsylvania.
Any suggestions on who to use to do a pre-purchase inspection up in New England?
Thanks

I'm in the market too -- but not in your area -- I'm in Texas -- what $$ are they asking?
Just doing some homework.
thx,
Mike

Those numbers look about right.
I've been shooting for a similar 06 CTTS with pipes & trailer package for $10K less.

DC Porsche...where I am doing pre-owned, those are the two options available at this time.
Based on your post, it is easy to infer that in your mind if, for the same money, you could do an 08 GTS or an 08 Turbo--even if the turbo has 13,000 more miles---it is an easy decision to go with the Turbo?
Thanks

Yeah turbo, by a long shot, and don't be in a hurry. Take it to your local dealer for a PPI and they can access everything about the car, pretty sure. Money well spent. My 04 is scary fast and I can also take it to the ranch and 4 wheel/hunt from it.

Thanks ALEV8.
"Funny" story about the local dealer and PPI. I also own a 996TT. I have taken it to the dealer on occasion but I have an Indy do most of the maintenance items. Bottom line is that I am in the Dealer's computer.
I called 3 days ago to ask about a PPI. They transferred me to someone's voicemail and I left a very detailed message that I was a customer calling about a PPI--I never heard back from them.
At this point I don't think I have ever put more time/energy into a car purchase before. Since I already have one Porsche, and in light of the stock markets reaction to the Obama re-election, I am 99% of the way to thinking that the most sensible thing to do is buy a new Toyota 4runner and drive that for a few years...then pick up a Cayenne for my next DD.
