Starter issues

Removal of the intake really isn't that difficult after you've done it once or twice. That 1 vacuum connector on the back right side of the engine can be a bitch though.

Touareg - I didn’t replace the coolant pipes, they were done under warranty by the previous owner. The starter didn’t look too bad; the aluminum was a little corroded on the underside.
Bill - you are correct, this is a pretty simple job, there's just a bunch of wires and hoses you have to remove and reassemble.....it only goes back together one way. There's no way to mess this up provided you don’t drop something down the inlet!

Looks like I will be tackling this on my 08 S. Been dealing with intermittent non starts on 1st turn on ignition.
Had the car diagnosed at Princeton Porsche and they are telling me its the starter. Time to get a list of all the hardware needed.
Will try to take pics and post a DIY.

Mine went at 85k. Just did the job on sunday. Actually turned out to easier than expected. For DFI, you have to dissconnect the fuel rail and move it out of the way. Not a hard job. Took me approx 3.5-4 hrs.
The new starter cranks much faster. Moved back to my old battery as it was still good. Have a spare battery now with only 2 months of use in case someone needs one.

my S didn't exactly go out but was making grinding noise during startup. 74k miles. thought it was belt slipping but dealer said starter. replaced with bosch starter. $429 + labor. no more grinding noise.
