There actually was a pre-heater w/ Timer option as a factory option:

7VE Pre Heater w/ Timer
Heats engine coolant and circulates to the
heater core to warm the passenger
compartment and defrost the windows.

ROW only, and might have been only thru MY04. 7VE is described as a timer -started fuel-based pre-heater, with its own exhaust. Apparently never got EPA/NHSTA approval for US-spec Cayennes.

What's wrong with a good old fashioned electric dip stick? I grew up in MN and it seems that all of the cars used them.

They are notorious and well documented firestarters, not to mention the coking they can cause. If you must install a heater, I strongly endorse a properly sized Wolverine pan heater.

Yep, thats the one - it was a Webasto unit IIRC

That reminds me, Jeff. Would you mind posting pics of any of the parts of the unit that you can actually see? I am really curious about how it is integrated into the overall Cayenne package. Cheers

You're taking about the actual heater unit? I have my inner fender liners off right now, I can easily take pictures tomorrow when I get to it again.

Great! I am really curious about how it all fits in there and works. Thanks!

Sure
Hope this helps. Driver side fender well. Shots with fender on and off.

Outer pipes are coolant in and out to engine. Center pipe is exhaust that exits under car.

Here's a link to a you tube video I did of the operation of the heater. Couple minutes long.

Thanks very much Jeff! That is some very cool engineering. I wish I had that option on my 2009 CTTS. Our place in the mountains regularly sees 60+ inches of snow and temps in the single digits and that option would be helpful on those incredibly cold days...

Cool. You have one too? They are rare. I use mine almost daily in the cold weather. Had to put a new coolant and fuel pump in a few weeks ago.

Regrettably, I don't have one. I wish I had that option... I have wondered how they work and as some others on the board have mentioned, if one could be retrofitted.

Well anything is possible. You have to pull engine and then route the new lines (well maybe with engine in but wow that would suck). Then out one climate head unit.
Perhaps you could just install the aftermarket version from Europe.

Just put that to google picture search and you'll see how small it actually is. Unfortunately it is for 230VAC (Scandinavia, most of Europe) and I do not know if it is available for 115VAC. Basically you could just hook it up to lover voltage safely but then the power would be halved also. Price here is in range of 100€ / 120$

Terve @Tumpelo how has this DEFA block heater worked out for you?

Indy shop warns me about frying oil risk.
