Post 19" or 20" for Turbo?

I have an order for a Cayenne Turbo MY04 and cannot decide between going for a 19" or 20" wheels. I plan to keep the car for at least 5 years and will be my everyday drive. The 20" look nicer but the 19" might be more practical and comfortable.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Personaly I'd go with the 20" wheels. They were on the turbo at my dealership when I went for the test and actually looked small on the car with much more room in the wheel well to fill in. I'm not sure about the difference in practicality and comfort but I usually upgrade the wheel size on cars that I order for more performance.

Seeing Techart or Gemballa 22 wheels on Turbo, You possibly don't consider 19" anymore.

WOW! A Cayenne rollin on Emmit Smiths, now those are hot! No way you could even think of 19's as an option.

Well just went to the dealer today to spec out a TT, and one hour before I was there he got a bulletin stating that 19 & 20" are not availble. OK so how much are the Tequipment 20".. only $6k plus tires... so I'd have to order the TT with the stock 18" and pay $7K for those 20" blade type rims.. I think not.. so now I'm going to check out the Techart 20 & 22"..
Check with your dealer to see if he can still order them.. mine said no

Right, only the 18" wheels are available. I think the Sport Techno wheel is the factory wheel of choice. I don't mind the appearance of the 19's but the 20's have a "clover" look that's just dull -- obviously the standard Cayenne S 18" wheel sets new lows of dull, boring wheel design -- I just don't get why Porsche has had such a collective brain fade on nice wheel designs. Porsche has some of the best wheel designs in history, even the '02 18" Carrera wheel is a delight, but these new Cayenne wheels are just woeful.

As for ride and handling, you just won't feel the ride difference from 19 to 20", it's hard to tell from 18" to 20" inchers and don't think it will do much for handling except the 20's might help postpone the terminal understeer. I'd go for the 20's but the 22's and 24's (and now 26's) start to look "low rider" silly and certainly impact comfort with harsh bump-thump -- they're also very easily damaged on bad roads and high speeds in a 5000lb heavy truck.

You will need 18's for off-road and snow chains. Porsche snow chains are extremely expensive, so don't worry about them, just get any hardened steel diamond pattern that's easy to install and designed for "low profile" applications to be sure it doesn't rip into the rims or the wheel wells.
I agree with the after-market idea, but the Sport Techno is really nice. But again, pricey:

CAYENNE SPORT TECHNO 20" with Michelin Daimaris
955 044 602 03 5518.16 125.00 $5643.00

You could get Gemballa or any of the great brands for those dollars, just please don't buy any of these "me too" brands that have jumped into the "appearance only" business to meet the demand from Escalade buyers.

Im checking into the cost of these... Tires are about $1k for 20's and $1260 for 22's.. These are The Techart Formula Rims.. not sure the price yet.. Im not sure if all these pics are 20's. I dont like the look of the 22's like the Gemballas.

I definately like the Tech Art rims over the Gemballa ones. And that yellow 996 looks so hot, gotta love the Tech Art front end!

Check you tyre options with 19" wheels -- the rubber makers often jump from 18 to 20 and up. 20 will be "okay" for off-road, you could put on Nitto NT404's for road driving or Nitto Terra Grapplers (stupid name, great tyre) for medium off-road duty. Be careful about unsprung weight -- the 20" wheels are heavy "for show" designs for the most part and some of the street tyres for 20's and larger diameters are incredibly heavy rubber -- you can end up with a lot more "bump thump" than you'd like. I think the 20's are about the limit too -- going beyond makes an SUV look excessive and absurdly impractical. I was looking at some very expensive rims (the ones where the centre piece is on a roller bearing so it spins after the car stops) on an escalade (22's) and the right front was crushed. It was sitting in a dealership and I didn't speak with anyone, but it looked like it had hit a curb or a pothole at speed -- the tyre wasn't deflated but the rim was history. Big, heavy trucks, hard, low-profile rubber, stiff suspension, ****ty California roads ... not the right deal.
All that said, whether I go with the Cayenne or the Touareg, I'll get 20's (probably like the Porsche Sport Techno Cayenne 20's) with Nitto TG's around 305.

Tell that to typical SoCal shops. I guarantee you'll be seeing slammed Cayennes with 26" dubs , earthquake inducing subwoofers all over the place soon.
Hope it doesn't come to pass.It would be a waste to have this remarkable handling neutered by adding 50 more pounds of unsprung weight at each corner and creating just another sluggish boulevard cruiser.
If the Cayenne becomes this year's "Escalade" with the LA style crowd, it could create a smarmy image for it and hurt long term sales .
