While I think Jap is offensive we should put a little perspective on the word. During any war one gov't does its best to demonize the other. It helps when you rally your nation and soldiers to kill others. Racial slurs, or words that turn into them are a natural part of it.

Jap was a very common word during and after WWII. After the extensive use by our govt and allies it has to be expected that members of the war generation will continue to use it (not all, but some). I have my fathers old Time Life History of WWII and it uses the word extensively.

Japan has turned from a bitter enemy to an ally. As a nation we worked hard after WWII to do this. Unfortunantly turning off the enmity that was necessary for war can take generations.

All that said, I haven't read anything that I would consider offensive in this thread.

I hope that was lucid... I'm on my 3rd Oban

I know Christian, we can't agree with this but fro me, before I moved to US, I had Porsche in Finland and big part of the 'Porsche mystique' or whatever that could be called was because of racing.
I had seen them in Le Mans etc. (only in TV) and always was exited.

Every year we (we were all Europeans) were at F1 races, when the cup cars came to the track, I was 'in heaven' listening those flat sixes!
When safety car came to the track (before the race) that was just one cool, quite fast car (it was that MB coupe) to everyone of us (I was only one who owned Porsche) but no one was 'exited' as they were when they saw Porsche there, and that exitement came (mostly) because we knew Porsche 911s are cars that are being raced.

Please excuse the departure from my usual sarcasm, but read "Flag's of Our Father's" and then tell what you think of how our new 'allies' conducted themselves in WWII. Must admit, even though my dad was 6 tour Marine in the Pacific during WWII he always called them the Japanese...

Gawwd... I feel so PC

I don't ever recall my Dad referring to them as anything but Japanese either. It was just in the "Time-Life" book (a fairly mainstream publication).

Let's see now... I was born in France among the Frogs, grew up in Germany among the Krauts, live in PacNW among the vegans and moldy people. Have German, Norwegian, Swedish, French, English, Portugese, and maybe a little grizzly if you ever see the hair on my back.

Ahh, almost time for my Oban and to fill out my DE entry
