What will you use it for and what is your budget? X6 is fun but not very practical. Cayenne is very fun and fairly practical - more headroom, storage space, etc. you can get and X6 fairly loaded for less than a similar cayenne but I would still choose the Cayenne any day.

Tex94 is bang on.
What are you using it for?
Practicality wise, the Cayenne is far better.
We drove both, and I enjoyed the Cayenne more (we have the V6 as well.)
Our car before the Porsche was a BMW 7 series, so we were Beemer lovers before we switched.
Good luck with your choice!

I personally prefer X6 - for one single reason, more bang for the buck. My fully loaded X5 50 was the same price as the base Cayenne.
If you are looking for 500 over invoice pricing less the team usa rebate and other applicable coupons, amazing lease rate, and keeping it for only three years, X6 is an awesome choice and an incredible SUV. Very few people - or I should say Americans - keep their BMWs nowadays.
If pricing is not your concern, you want something light, agile and fun, fenders panels not made of frigging cheap plastics, willing to sacrifice for a little performance for overall fit and finish quality, and the made-in-germany vin sticker, there's simply no alternative for Cayenne.

I d choose Cayenne any day. Even though X6 looks cool and would be loaded for the base Cayenne price,I would not go with it because of the weird electronic problems that will waste my time. I remember seeing lots of BMW lemon law buyback X5s on dealer auctions.X5 ~ X6

Not sure about the reliability of BMWs, but I still drive several without a single issue (except for some peeling trim issues) even when they are out of warranty, and I always have nothing but good things to say about BMW customer service.

Your car must still be within the warranty period, under 50k mi.

The x6 can be optioned with a rear bench seat now, so can seat five. They are actually comparable in price. I'm leaning towards the Cayenne, the wife likes the x6.

I am finishing a 3 year lease on a X6 50i. Fun drive, we loved the way it looks from the outside, but interior space in the back row is minimal (we had the 4 seat version, now you can order 5 seats as a $300 option) Depending the size of your kids, the back seat is limited. Anyone over 5' tall would find the back seats unconfortable in the X6.
The pros of the BMW is great performance (the twin turbo's are awesome), the car gets a lot of attention (more unique look compared to the base cayenne) and the 4 year 50,000 miles full maintenance is awesome.
Due to the size issues, we are switching to the Cayenne GTS (2013) wich is $30,000 more after all options and slightly slower than the x6 50i. Add to that the maintenance cost and it is hard to justify the Cayenne. It was an impulse buy after my wife saw the Cayenne GTS pictures in Carmine red with the red stiching in the seats. I hope we will enjoy the Cayenne GTS, but it is certainly a significant jump in cost.
(by the way, BMW has very favorable lease cost compared to similarly priced MB and Porsche leases, I think they keep the lease residual artificially high to move the cars off the lot faster)
One last thing, the X6 35i feels underpowered compared to the v8 twin turbo 50i and the cost difference is small. If you decide to get the X6, I would recommend the 50i. Oh, and get the soft close doors. Awesome feature for minimal extra cost.

The X6 is...er... unique looking, that's for sure. I don't find it to be attractive at all, but I know that's a subjective thing.
Personally, I like the Cayenne much better. I also think it has more usable space, although it's not exactly huge.

I like the X6 at the same time I don't. It's just to cartoonish looking to me from the rear. Its trying to hard to look like sports car. The Cayenne looks rather mature and well though out design and well grounded SUV. An SUV should be an SUV.

X6 pros are as follows:
1. Better looking than BMW minivan aka X5
2. More options & cheaper than P!G
3. That's it
X6 cons:
It won't make you $10k after 6 months of ownership
