Well I can say it drives well (even for a non-air suspension version), but overall I can't say it is inspiring ...

Pro's
* The platform is rock solid. This thing is really screwed together.
* Noticeable lack of road noise at speed
* The stock V8 has a nice rumble when you stand on it. 100 mph can up fairly quickly, and it felt well planted at speed. The turbo must be amazing.
* The tip box may be the best auto I've ever driven (though there is a slight hesitation that I also experience on the allroad)
* The brakes rip your molars out, but they are a little touchy at first.
* Turn in handling was nice with very little body roll, even under 4 wheel drift
* The entertainment /NAV center is nice
* The front seats are good

Con's
* Sorry, but it does not look better in the flesh. The lines are weak. The corners are lumpy. The nose is turned up trying to look too much like a 996. The back lights are not well integrated. And the rockers don't work. This should only be bought in black.
* The stock wheels are wimpy
* The rear leg room is scant, and the seat bottom doesn't reach your thighs, so forget long comfortable rides for rear passengers. They'll be squirming within 1/2 hour.
* The hatch fails the dog test. It's not much bigger then the X5.
* The interior materials are ok, but not in the league of Audi. And what's up with all the silver bits - way, way, way, over done.
* The A pillar has a bad visual dead zone where the mirror housing connects to the car.
* The price is ridiculous ($60K to start)

Bottom line
Is this really worth all the extra scratch verses the T-egg? And for pure luxury, make mine a Rover...

Does Porsche offer some alternative finish to all the fakey metal silver trim pieces?

I just test drove an S and spent some time in a Turbo. The interior is a disappointment, even in the Turbo that I checked out. The gray plastic, faux aluminum, is border line insulting at that price level(68k for the S, 98k for the Turbo). The quality of the wood and leather in my 996, Audi, and Rover all seem nicer then what's in the three Cayennes I saw. The exterior looked like it does in the pics; the chrome C pillars are kind of cheesy and we all know about the front. Driving it was nice, nice firm seats, Bose is ok not as nice as Harmon Kardon stock system in the Rover. The tip wasn't too impressive, which surprised me, it seemed to always pick a higher gear then I wanted. The brakes are awesome, pure Porsche. Visibilty compared w/the Rover was poor. Power was good, but nothing spectacular, it felt like a 5.9L Grand Cherokee w/firmer seats (I've never driven an X5). The handling was very good, though I didn't push it like I would've liked ( I didn't want to freak out the salesman). The cargo room was also unimpressive. Overall I was disappointed, and they're hardly sold out.

I test drove an S and a turbo. The ride was great..felt like a sportscar, but with alot more room. Bose sound system was awesome. The turbo was a rocket..lots of fun on a straight-away and the cornering is superb. It blows the X5 and the ML away. The cayenne looks alot better in person than in pictures. Ordered my girlfriend an S today!! Cant wait...

I was at the Arlington unveiling, and you know what...the car is awesome. I personally feel its one of the greatest things Porsche has ever done. To everyone saying there is not adequate room, its BS. The driver and passenger seats are extremely spacious, especially if you drop them to their lowest setting. The rear was also comfortable. It reminded me of the Lexus RX300 but more bucket style. Sadly, the cars at Arlington were ordered with almost everything i wouldnt add as an option. And personally, i would never put that stupid navigation screen in a car. Ide rather order the Turbo suspension, full sport seats, etc... I drive an SUV daily, and there are 2 other SUVS in my household, and the Cayenne i feel is perfect. Much better than what is out there now. If i must drive a car that can go offroad, and carry large items, i would rather drive a Porsche. Safety, feel, etc... Why would you want luxury items in an SUV ??? Who cares, i would prefer a plastic interior in the Cayenne and even cloth over fanciness. I would think twice about going on a surfing trip with wax, boards, sand, water, food, and other crap and a few people and tossing them all in some luxurious vehicle. And with hauling large items and equipment in aluminum cases that i do, leather would easily get ripped and worn. I configured a Cayenne at 61k with all the options i could possibly want. cont...

To me, Porsche is about what you feel inside, and driving. They have continued that with the Cayenne, and for that alone it is worth its cost. You cannot find its feel in another vehicle. Personally the Cayenne is the only other Porsche to truly move and inspire me as the 944 does. (well..ok the new 996 targa too...) I just cant understand how soo many people cant really see mto justify the car. I think it speaks for itself.

I don't see the new luxury-oriented Range Rover as directly competing with the sports-oriented Cayenne, but the former does have an elegant interior which is still very tough and practical (soft-touch plastics, real metal trim, tough leather, heavy-duty rubber floormats). "Pretty" and "practical" are not mutually exclusive.

My big gripe with the Cayenne is the same as with many other recent German manufacturers' offerings (not to mention, Aston Martins). The quality of the interior trim and switches should befit a car costing $70 - 95K. Metal trim should really be metal, not cheap imitation plastic. Plastics, when used, should be soft and of a high quality, not hard and shiny.

A Porsche should be built to last, and not just in the mechanical department.

I'm 5'11", and with the seat in normal position, I got in the back seat. My knees didn't hit the driver seat (came real close), but worse you can't extend your feet (there's that upturn under the front seats).

And the rear seat bottom does not angle up to reach your thighs, so you can not really rest them on the seat either. Instead your knees are higher then your thighs (with no support), and your feet are looking for somewhere to stretch out - poor execution, passengers will feel cramped real quick.
