real porsche?no...but won't hurt porsche's respect
even though the cayenne is a tank compared to a 911, it out performs a boxter???(non-turbo version)
while the turbo version would beat all non turbo porsches.....
performance wise don't look down at it....if i had to have an SUV, id sure as hell like it to have a porsche crest on the bonnet....
porsche will always be PORSCHE....no-one will look down at porsche because they still produce the ultimate car, the 911...and no-one would put down that car....
they won't go 'you're 911 is made by a company that makes SUV's, so it's a bad car', they'll say either
'an SUV porsche???not a real porsche' (until they race it)
or
'an SUV by the company that makes the 911???must be pretty good'
make up your own mind.....(i don't like them building an SUV, but it's not the end of the world)

"real porsche?no...but won't hurt porsche's respect"
Sure it does,
I've already heard many people asking "wasn't Porsche supposed to be a sportscar company?" Now it's not a pure 'race car' company anymore etc.
And many of these comments were made by non-Porsche owners who are not purist etc. at all, you can imagine comments from purists (like me)...

...ermm... Porsche hasn't been a "pure race car company" for a LOT of years... Not since they stopped having real factory sponsored teams. I wholeheartedly WISH Porsche would go back to being a racing company, it would be great to see our Porsche heritage back in the motorsport world... because right now it's only being carried by those of us who are out there fielding our own teams, and not by the company itself. That being said, I have heard a few rumours of the Cayenne being Rally raced in the near future... if that comes true (oh how I wish it would), we may just see Porsche's reintroduction to motorsports. All thanks to the vehicle you are curently complaining about ruining your "race car company."

Purists.... is that sort of like the "purists" who complained when Porsche first introduced the watercooled 4-cyl engine? The ones who said the 928, 914, 944/51, and 968 also weren't "real" Porsches? The ones who believe nothing but a 911 is a "real" Porsche? I really hope not.

"...ermm... Porsche hasn't been a "pure race car company" for a LOT of years... Not since they stopped having real factory sponsored teams..."
That's very true and sad, but starting to build trucks is way worse than 'semi-factory' racing with 911's.

I couldn't agree more!

Yeah right,
I've heard that rumour couple of times myself, fact is that VW will race with their Tuareg in Paris-Dakar, judging by Porsches latest 'moves' (like 'latest rumour' says, Porsche will not even race with GT at Le Mans!), I'll bet all racing they'll do is how fast they can do a Cayenne Pick-up! I sincerely hope I'm wrong though.

Not quite (I'm talking about myself now), I'm not the biggest fan of 924 but I 'just' think it is a 'real' Porsche.
Even though, 911 clearly is, in my opinion, the best and most 'real' Porsche, my definition of a 'real' Porsche is not based on where the engine is etc.
In my opinion, cupholder doesn't belong into a Porsche (or any sportscar for that matter), nor does tiptronic etc.
However, all that sort of things seem now almost fine, when I'm comparing them to a Cayenne.
I'm sorry this came out so long, but I didn't enough time to make it shorter.

The Cayenne will weigh about 5200 pounds. The hp figures may seem like a lot (and everybody is impressed by hp figures), but if you look at the weight/power ratios, it is less impressive. Apart from which, they are carrying lots of weight around in curves.

Well, I'm quite sure that any version of Cayenne that was raced would be put on a severe diet. I'll bet you there's a lot of useless weight in there.

You're absolutely right on that one... The day they started rolling Porsches off the line with Tiptronic and cupholders was a sad day indeed... It pains me to see what was one a no nonsense pure race car now plauged with useless extra weight and "soft" suspensions to make that trip to the grocery store more comfy....

There is a lot of hype about this station wagon (I mean SUV), but if you look in the brochure at the published 0-60 and top speeds, they are comparable to a X5, not even close to being as good as a normally aspired 911, even the turbo wagon!

Thats why the 914 was such a big hit. No hp but also no weight, theirfore, a great racer/autocrosser.

They won't race it...(or now the GT for goodness sake )
It has limited cargo "utility"...
It's bloated...
It's ugly...
It's expensive...
It's way too late to market...
And it's ugly (bares repeating)...
Other then that, Porsche should get a lot of respect for building the Pepper-fish
