By 2005, the factory should be sticking that V-8 in the 996 (or whatever designation Porsche gives to the next "911"). How about 400 h.p., normally aspirated??

Guys,
I pass on the advice that I received. When you see a Cayenne go out with a tape measure in hand. Pop the lid and take some measurements. Then find the nearest 911, any series up to and including the 996. Measure the available space. I am told it will not fit. It is far too big. The V8 for the future 911 will be a different engine. If of course they decide to build one.
Ciao,
Adrian

The whole V8 thing will HAVE to be a front engine car. The 989, or successor to the 928 series...

Dear John,
Whilst I agree with what you say I know there are 2 schools of thought at the moment. Front or rear V8. I do not know which is going to win. I am a supporter of front for the V8. A nice new 6 cylinder Turbo for the 911 would be nice.

Rumor I heard is that the rear of the 996 successor will be raised to make place for the V8...

Christer -

I belive the car would need to be raised to accomodate the V-8. The current flat 6 engine has the pistons running horizontally, that is side to side. In the V-8, the piston are vertical, running up and down. So the engine itself has more depth to it as opposed to the current 911 engine. If you have ever seen a 991 engine out of the car you can see what I am talking about. Click on this eBay auction for a good picture illustrating this -

I toured the factory this past April and thought, when seeing the engines from both a Cayenne and a 996TT, "no way is that V8 gonna fit in a 996".
It is simply huge, even next to the TT engine, especially in height.

Many years ago there used to be a small Abarth Simca 1300 rear-engined sports car. The rear had a real hump. Think this is what will happen to the 996 successor.

It might fit. I remember reading about a company called Renegade hybrids or something to that effect that installs chevy v-8's into older 911's. Now if they can fit that beast in that tiny compartment I guess that the porsche factory has got a good chance of fitting the Cayenna V8 in a 996.

But then IMHO, would it really be a 911 without a boxer six engine? I can handle the argument that water cooling was needed so that cars could be sold but a whole new engine that has absloutly no connection at all with the 911 heritage is blasphemy.
