Me and a couple of buddies always argues over Euro cars and American and Japanese cars. Really more kidding around than arguing. But I don't see why Porsche, in my opinion the finest sports car manufacturer needs to go "fit in". They make sports cars. They do it well (though I'm not much of a 996 fan). Stick to the sports cars damn it. Then the SUV. Ok I can see the ups and downs. But a pickup? The thing that gets me is that SUV aren't really ever going off the road, and aren't really ever going to haul loads of cargo (like gravel) around. Pickups do that though. Big Chevy and Ford Pickups. Oh yeah Dodge too. But those are cheap in comparison and designed for work. Who's going to drive a Cayenne Pickup over to a construction site, load a whole bunch of dirt in it, scratch it and beat it up and then put it back in their garage? That's a waste. I saw how the Blackwood or whatever it was called failed. Ok that's my theory. I'll shut up now.

C'mon guys - this is all photoshop rubbish - the guy who "airbrushed" that pickup onto the back of a press release picture of the Cayenne is laughing his head off right now.

Nope it's true. I don't know about the Tony Llama version but a friend who knows someone who is related to someone who works at Porsche in Atlanta says the pickup is for real. It reportedly lapped Road Atlanta under cover of darkness faster than the 996 Turbo- while carrying a full load of cow manure. Hurley Haywood took one sniff and reportedly refused to drive the thing but Doc Bundy said aw what the hell and let er rip. An unfortunate spin on his fourth lap negated even better lap times and resulted in a protest by track workers who refused to clean up the mess.

Now we can see what happens when the decisions are not dictated by car enthusiasts but by the stock holders. If they see a market for toasters, they will build them.

Dear Serge,
In a way they do have something to do with toasters. The designer of the 911, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche III sells toasters with "Designed by Porsche" or "Porsche Design" on them. Along with many other kitchen utensils, radios etc.
Ciao,
Adrian
911C4

PS: FAP III is back in favour with PAG now and is doing quite a lot of work for them in the merchandising area. You should see the merchandising stuff that was on display when I was recently at the Porsche stand at the International Motorshow in Lisbon Portugal. Make your hair curl. Mind you the mouse pads are very nice. 996TT and my mouse as I send this reply is riding on it.

Cayenne pickup?

Yeah, while we're at it, lets increase the engine capacity to 8L and put some push rods in. To hell with independent suspension, lets put leaf springs all round. And I certainly wont buy it until I get a huge bullbar and plenty of fake wood.

Now, where's my shotgun and my (cousin/wife)bitch...
