Default '06 Touareg V10 TDI or '05 Cayenne Turbo?

Really torn between the two of these. Going to be my daily driver and tow my 944 to the track during the season.

I like the performance of the CTT, the TDI gets 50% better mpg. TDI is more $$ to purchase...

Thoughts?

the tdi is way heavier.. thus nose heavy... The tdi will have mountains of torque and good fuel economy but just wont have nearly the same balanced driving dynamics. Also I find the power steering feedback on the touaregs to be more numb and overly boosted. I guess in the end it depends on your use case. You can run biodiesel in the egg.. but again it weighs 5,800 lbs.. so dont expect it to almost feel like a sports car like the cayenne will.

Also dont think I am diesel averse.. having owned a highly modded tdi jetta, multiple mercedes diesels, and a full sized dodge diesel pickup. I love diesels and if i could afford to replace my c43 amg I would be looking very hard at the 3 series diesel... because its got such good specs. I just think the v6 egg tdi's are under powered and the v10's too heavy.

Very good engine, great torque and power curve, good range on a tank, VW TDi's have good longevity, good resale value. Decent interior space, VAG interior ergonomic design is regarded as the best.

I don't regard my DD and/or my tow vehicles as driving machines, so agile, nimble, etc need not apply.

Still there isnt a wealth of data on the longevity of the v10 since its a low volume engine and unique in the VW lineup.

VW dealer wasn't willing to deal on the Touareg at all. Came down $700 on their asking price, so I'm taking a pass on it. I'm not willing to pay them huge dollars over the cost of a Cayenne. They also refused to negotiate on the price of the warranty and based on how rare the motor is and how difficult it is to service, I feel a warranty is a must have on it.

You're right.
Best to go with the Porsche V8. Now there is a wealth of data...

I would agree with this. They are not easy to work on. All things being equal, for your purposes, I would prefer the V10TDI. I even talked to a mechanic whose customer had one with a tune, and said it was faster than his Cayenne Turbo S. On the other hand, the Cayennes are a better value, and much easier to work on.

If the dealer was willing to work on the price more I'd buy it. $700 off their asking price and nothing off the warranty makes for too large a cost differential between the two trucks.
