Diesel Cayenne or X5?
I do a lot of driving (35K a year) and trying to decide between ordering a diesel Cayenne and X5.
I've had several BMWs but never a Porsche. Always been told that Porsches are too expensive to keep for the long haul.
What your experience been? Can I get 250K trouble free miles from a Cayenne with proper maintenance?
Who has the highest mileage Cayenne here?
Thanks for your insights!

I presume that you are looking at the diesel version of both vehicles. The fuel economy of both vehicles should be about the same. The BMW includes free maintenance for the first few years of ownership. The Cayenne will not. The Cayenne diesel is coming to the US but it is not here yet so right now noone here can answer your question about durability with any degree of certainty. The Cayenne diesel has been available overseas for a while so you might be able to get an answer checking out foreign sites.

cayenne diesel = audi diesel = touareg diesel with a little change in software or whatever to get a 5hp gain over its siblings. it's been available here in the EU since 2008 I think, it's not uncommon to see a cayenne diesel with 100K miles on the clock and same engine in audis (A4, A6, A8...) and vw get around doing waaaaay more and still run (they are used in many taxis as well so 300K miles is nothing rare).
I've had my share of diesel cars including bmw 3.0d and they are pretty much the same coming from vw, bmw, mercedes etc. injectors will die at around 200K miles, turbo will let go at about 250K - that is if you let your engine warm up slowly (diesels take longer time to warm up!) and cool the turbo after prolonged heavy use.
I sold my bmw 530d when it had 225K miles on the clock and I see the guy driving around town and smiling. overhauled the turbo at around 200K as it was making funny noises, but otherwise, the car was/is running great to this day.

x5 5192 lb 262 bhp 428 ft·lb 19/26 mpg
cayenne 4794 lb 240 bhp 406 ft·lb 20/28mpg
that specific bmw diesel engine is very well regarded...
Either engine can be woken up about 25% with a tune.
I first entered numbers for the european versions... the US models all take on 200-300 lbs.. US spec emissions and safety equip really adds weight.

What does the bolded line mean? I just ordered a Cayenne Diesel for September delivery and would love to increase hp/performance if possible. What does the tune involve, who does it and how much does it cost? Obviously not a car tech guy so I appreciate your help.

Well with engine management mods there are two main routes.. tuning boxes and ecu remaps. Most people still under warranty opt for tuning boxes because they can be disconnected prior to service. There is a whole bunch of info to explore re: power mods.. but in general turbo diesels respond quite well to remaps/boxes.
