Have you not seen this discussed in the last month that you've been on the forum? Yes... it's true...

It shouldn't cost that much, even from a dealer.

Here's what it cost me back in 2010:

Starter replacement (non-dealer) - $959
Coolant pipes (non-dealer) - $1777

I didn't mean to be harsh... I just wasn't sure if you were trolling or if your post was legitimate...

That's definitely high. Mine were about $1,800 at a Porsche dealer. They would be even less at an independent mechanic. Even if you add in a new starter, I would think it would be less than that, like Pops said...

Isn't there a DIY somewhere? I remember seeing it but cannot remember where.

Just do it yourself and save a ton of $$. Besides, it gives a great sense of achievement... and an excuse to stay away from the wife/family Also, Excellence magazine had an article on how to do this as well (again, cannot remember which month it was. Getting old sucks!).

A friend of mine did his coolant pipes replacement and it cost him $1400. So, $3000 is a lot unless he is installing pipes made of fancy metal. Replacing the starter should not cost any extra since you are already there when replacing the pipes.
