Default Crankshaft Position Sensor CEL Code

Hello. I am having a recurring check-engine light problem on a 2004 Cayenne (V6). The code is P0017 (“crankshaft position sensor, bank 1 sensor B”). First time the CEL came on, I had the code read at Autozone but it cleared itself after driving around for several days. And it stayed off for several weeks and 1000+ miles of driving. Second time it came on, I cleared it by cycling the engine controller fuse. This time it only stayed off a few days and maybe 100 miles of driving. So this third time I had the code read again, and it is the same. Of course, the vehicle seems to be running just fine.

Suggestions? Anyone else had this problem? Can anyone point me to where this sensor is located, or maybe a connector associated with this sensor?

Thanks!

Thought I should post a follow-up. After piddling around with this "P0017" error code for months, I finally think I have made it go away. I just replaced the exhaust camshaft position sensor (picture attached). The part was about $90 on line. It is located on the rear side of the engine. Although difficult to get to, it is not impossible. Removing the connector required a special tool made out of a coat hanger which I originally made for removing the connectors from the coils (to change spark plugs). Removing the sensor is pretty much a blind operation, so I had to use a mirror to see what I was doing. There is just one alan head bold that holds it in. Once this bolt is removed, it can be easily pulled out.

Now....I have started getting a DIFFERENT check engine code (see my other post regarding P0413). But the P0017 code is gone.

Stumbled on this thread. My dealer says they rarely replace crankcase position sensors on Cayennes. I have an 04 Turbo - 116K miles. I read somewhere on here that CPS and Purge Valves are two causes of hard starting. My dealer concurred with the purge valve so I replaced that. Not two weeks later the problem got worse and I checked and and was throwing P0335 CKP.

When I discussed with my dealer they though it was odd - suggested checking wiring and connectors, which I have yet to do. The new CKP is almost $200 so I hate to replace it if it's not the problem.

Anyone have any toughts?
