Changed the Differential Oil and Transfer Case Oil Fluid

I have done it on multiple Audi's before as I have the Vagcom software and cord which is like Durametric but in many ways light years ahead, and does read the transmission temp. I purchased the Durametric but compared to the VW / Audi Vagcom program it is overpriced and full of bugs and low on features. Maybe I'll hook up the Cayenne this weekend and see if I can find the transmission temp, I will bet that it is there somewhere, then I'll post back as I plan on doing my tranny in the next couple of months as I just past 55K and I'm sure the Turbo S is a little harder on the tranny than the regular Turbo.

Hello all,
Many sites referred transfer case oil is the same as ATF oil. But in the spec sheet indicated different part number for the Transfer case & ATF (ex: Transfer case: 000 043 205 09 or (LT71141) --- on the ATF bottle I bought: 000 043 205 30).
When I opened the ATF bottle, the color is brownish (normal oil color), not RED not BLUE. I already drained the fluid from the transfer case! Please advise!
Thank you,
ManN

The transfer case oil is definitely a ATF, Esso spec LT71141 is a common ATF spec. Mine was thin just like an ATF and I replaced it with Redline D4 ATF which exceeds Esso spec LT71141. The TSB bulletin is correct.

Just drained the xfer case oil and damn if that stuff didn't look like gear oil and not ATF. I came in here to verify it is supposed to be ATF. Couldn't get to the front diff fill plug with my regular 8mm hex wrenches so I cut about 1" off the end of a old hex wrench but the plug is too tight for my wimpy 8mm box wrench. I'm going to have to get a better 8mm / 5/16 6-point box wrench to get that thing out.
Edit: had another spare long handle 8mm hex wrench and cut about 3/4 in. of it and it worked fine (w/ help from a hammer on the hex).

The transfer case is filled at the factory with a blue tinted ATF oil. The replacement ATF will be red. Don't let that scare you. I read this information in the the repair manual pdf (or whatever you call it). The manual specifically mentioned this information, I double checked it to make sure I was not putting in the wrong fluid.

Yeah, if the stuff that I drained out had ever been red I am in for some big problems 'cause it sure was dark when I drained it out!
Filled it back up w/ the M1 Synth ATF and it was red.

My newly acquired 06S has 80k on the clock. What can I expect an reputable indy to charge for this service? I have a few I want to call, but just wondering what I should be quoted.
Lastly, all three diffs need to be flushed and filled?
Thanks!

Awesome write up! Thank you! I did both diffs and the transfer case last week; Used Mobil 1 gear oil for the diffs and Redline D4 ATF for the transfer case (all fluids plus 2 hand pumps all for about $50 on amazon). One note to make, I found a set of short metric hex keys at Lowes (silver colored, generic brand) for less than $3 that fit the front diff. That way you don't have to cut a standard key. I then used a small-ish deep socket on my longest 3/8" extension as a makeshift breaker bar.

The real kicker is the price of the ATF they will replace it with, if it comes in a Porsche bottle it will be priced like liquid gold, a Mobil or other brand should be more reasonably priced.

The transfer case and both (front & rear) differentials are very easy to change when you have the right tools. The transmission is the kicker and would depend if they're just flushing the tranny (like from a coolant line) or if they're dropping the pan and changing the transmission filter. If that's the case $400 sounds reasonable (considering it's a Porsche....), at least to me.

Alot of people are going with Mobil 1 atf, I would go with Aisin http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...smission Fluid
And use maeyle filter and pan gasket. Differentials would get Liqui Moly gear oil: http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...fferential Oil
