Default Current Discounts?

My good buddy is picking up his ordered CS, 87K MSRP, tomorrow, from my dealer who I kind of pushed him to deal with. (They have ALWAYS taken very good care of me.) They haven't negotiated the price yet, and I am wondering where the "market" discounts are running around now.

Your friend is picking up a car tomorrow that he special ordered, presumably paid a significant deposit on, and there has been no previous discussion of price? Hmmmmm. Under the circumstances I don't see where your buddy has much leverage or the dealer much incentive to negotiate any discount. Hopefully, as a courtesy to you he'll get a couple of percent. Given the popularity/scarcity of Cayennes I'd be surprised if he could get more than 3-4% even under the best bargaining conditions.

Why would your buddy order a car and feel that there is an opportunity to re-negotiate the price on the day of delivery?

I guess it would depend on how significant a deposit he put down and what documentation (contract) was executed. If no contract and a small deposit, I am not sure who has the leverage, especially with a custom order.

nego when you order, not when you pick it up.

+1. Why didn't they talk price at the time of order? My guess is the dealer thinks they're selling the car at msrp. Hopefully, your dealer gives him a little something based on your relationship.

Sounds like his only card is you. If they have taken care of you in the past and you are brining a new customer, they should give a little discount for that. Not sure how things are in LA but in the Bay Area, I only saw one new Cayenne, a hybrid, listed on a dealer website.

He has no obligation to buy the car. Unfortunately, I wasn't there when he ordered, should have gone with him. When I picked mine up two years ago, the GM gave me a price and I said OK and thanked him (it was a substantial discount). (I ordered without negotiating a price, and with no deposit.)

It actually sounds like the market is pretty tight right now and that the discounts are not all that substantial. That's OK, I just want to make sure he gets a "reasonable" deal given the current market conditions.
