Lane Change Assist - Good idea or an annoyance?

Lane Change Assist - Good idea or an annoyance?
I know this is a pretty boring topic, but...as noted in an earlier post, I have to lock down my order on Monday for my Cayenne. I drive a lot of highway/toll roads and prefer the Cayenne for visibility (versus my Cayman S) when I'm among the semi's/truck.
I always thought lane change assist would be an option for my wheel chair when I'm racing around a retirement home...but...I'll admit it is more and more appealing on long driving days when my coffee has worn off.
So, after that intro - for those of you that have it - does it work as advertised, or, do you find yourself still second guessing your lane changes on fast toll roads?
Thank you for your time!
PS - I posted another request about adaptive cruise control if you have that - please give me some feedback on that option too!

I also was unsure about adding this option, but in my prior suv, the mirrors never seemed to cover the entire area (of course, look anyway!). So I went ahead and ordered it. it's taken a bit of time to get used to it and I need to keep the indicator turned high so I notice it, but it works extremely well. it only warns of cars in the correct vicinity (lane). I'd order it again.

While the mirrors and sight lines of the new Cayenne are among the best I've seen in SUV-dom, I can assure you that you will be happy you included this option into your build.
i'm one of those guys who sets his side mirrors for the blind spots, not the side of the car. I really don't understand why anyone would do it any other way, you already have a rearview mirror.
Nonetheless it's just another quick way to check your envelope. Get it...

i can only imagine when these systems start to go and someone is just blindly turning into the lane beside them, i have no problem with visibility in my cayenne, and turn my head as one should.. hell my exige has no rear window, no rear view mirror and tiny side mirrors and i've still never almost hit someone, as you look twice, turn once.... i can only imagine the driver thats hesitant to get into a lane using this system instead of actually looking.

If someone is relying on LCA as the primary way to decide whether it's safe to change lanes that's obviously a big mistake. But my guess is that everyone here is using it as a failsafe in addition to looking in the mirror. Anyone can make a mistake and having the lights as a secondary reminder is a useful and desireable feature, IMO. It's coming on my Cayenne and I can't see any downside to having it.
I use it as a quick NO. If it's not lit I can look further, if lit I just stay in my lane. It does have a pretty wide range though and it's safe to change if the other car is in the back of that range and not overtaking you too quickly.

All - thanks for your input - this helped me make up my mind to get it. As for using only LCA or depending on it - as noted by others, that is the last reason I would get it. I've been through driver's schools, I ride a motorcycle regularly, and ride 150 miles a week on my bicycle for training - I believe I have a pretty good sense of where cars are around me in traffic. Howevever, once in a while I still miss someone behind me - and i'll take all the help I can get on those days ;o).
Again - I really appreciate this forum and the insight provided - even on a truly simple thing like this.

riporter5 - 150/wk. are you still racing, or just funning it?
BTW, the latest Valentine One detectors don't like Lane Assist and throw a false positive from the rear. You have to re-program the POP feature off. Instructions are available from the website. Escorts seem immune...

Allegretto,
I primarily train for fitness now, with an occasional race here and there. I help run two cycling clubs, one for master's racers, the other for all levels of experience - off and on road. Rode 60 hard miles (lots of hills) with my club this morning ;o). At least I can eat a big lunch!
Thanks for the tip on the Valentine One's - that my RD of choice...I found that it did not like my Cayman S much either...mid engine gave off something that drove it nuts!
I'll research the reprogramming before my C comes in.

Get the option. The side view mirrors on the 2011 Cayenne are nicely styled, but relatively useless on this SUV. They are one of my top Cayenne negatives.
I have LCA and it is a good indicator that there's someone in your blind spot. And, you will have some large blind spots no matter where you rotate the mirrors.
So, it is a good option once you get used to it. But, also swivel your head around before you make that lane change. It's easy to turn LCA off inadvertently by a button next to the mirror adjust buttons on the armrest.
I'd like to see a change where the bottom LCA LCD on the outside mirrors is Red if LCA is off. There will be a day when you think LCA is on and surprise, surprise as a vehicle comes by as you were getting ready to change lanes. (been there).

how about green if it's on and red if it's off
and then some sort of pilot light if it was truly on, maybe a claxon horn if off (or on, perhaps?)
this is great designing options...
J/K...
