Default Changed my spark plugs on the 06 Cayenne V6

Just thought I would mention how easy it was to change the 1st generation V6 plugs. I have read horror stories about how much the dealer charges for this. I've heard it can be $800-$1000. I didn't even bother to check with mine as it was so easy.

Plugs were about $65 from Suncoast.

The engine cover just pops off. The coils are on the top of the engine. Disconnect each one and pull it off the plug. Using a spark plug socket, remove and replace the plug. Reinstall the coil and connect it. The plugs are pre-gapped. Took less than 1 hour. The coils can be a little tricky to pull out, but by twisting and pulling they do come out pretty easily. A puller could probably be fashioned from a coat hanger or something like that.

I thought about replacing the coils, but they were in great shape. Some very minor corrosion but no signs of deterioration or cracking. The coils have been problematic on the V8 but not on my V6.

Posted this again in the 993 forum, K-D Tools makes an excellent set of spark plug sockets. Handy for most vehicles.

I did this on Sunday and haven't driven the vehicle yet. But I doubt it since there were no noticeable problems when I changed them. I was just following the maintenance schedule and changing at 60K miles.

I will say that the old plugs were in very good condition. Very minimal discoloration and deposits. No visible wear. I didn't check the gap, but it didn't appear visually to be any wider than the new plugs. Porsche has a 60K mile change interval. But most other manufacturers have a 100K interval. At 110 you should probably change them!

ha ha.....yes, I just sold my secondary car a few months ago and worried about taking it apart then not putting it back together properly..........and if the fact that the plugs have been in a suncoast box in back for months getting stepped on by lab and not still being gapped right.

ITs all my fault but im sure it would help some.

The check engine light came on yesterday and I noticed a rough idle; my brother also stated that I was missing when I pulled away from his place (after a weekend spent out in the wilds of western New York, driving up and down the quarter-mile unpaved mud-track that is his poor excuse for a driveway), although the long drive home was flawless (as was the drive out). I went to my mechanic today and he diagnosed an intermittently missing cylinder, and quoted me $325 for new plugs and a coil pack.

A few quick searches revealed that a new set of coil packs (with a warranty!) from eBay will run me $125 ($295 from Suncoast? Huh?), a set of plugs is $65 (Best price from Suncoast.), and this thread says it's so easy that even I might be able to pull it off.

Tally ho! I'm in hot. Further updates as events warrant...

Shawyn, is your car V6 or V8? I got same problem yesterday and trying to DIY. Got to try ebay. Price seems very reasonable with warranty.

No, I never actually did it. Car's been running fine and the coils are easy enough to get that I figured I'd deal with it when it became time to deal with it.

That, or I just forgot...

today on the way into work my 2006 base started to stutter and slow greatly.....CEL came on, lunch break at Autozone said Misfire on all Cylinders...

Have Plugs at home, going to dealer tomorrow to buy 6 new plugs, then see how improved my gas mileage and pep I get back.........up until 95k I could get 22 conservatively in the city and 24-26ish on highway staying around 2k in rpms or 55 mph.

I just hope I dont snap off on of those connectors! No 2nd car anymore to make it back to the dealer.

At 111k miles.

ok V6ers, I ran to dealer today and got 6 new coils for 298. I already had a set of new plugs from suncoast purchased a year ago.

DO THIS AT 60K, DONT LET THE CEL LIGHT FIRE!!! Im kicking my own *** right now that I was too lazy not to do this many miles ago.

The engine pulls solid all the way through now and I think its eliminated the hesitation under accleration I was experiencing from 2nd to 3rd and assuming I may have a pending valve body issue. To be solved at a later time

Let the engine cool.......this is easy, you just have to fanagle with each one but make sure you get out the little curly q tool in the back...

My first 4 I pulled the entire connector and coil tube out after playing with each one to loosen them up. ITs a B*&ch to pull them apart from connector and tube but I assure you, when the plastic cools down enough, they will separate if you keep pulling them apart like your trying to open an elevator door.

Saving all the coils and plugs in spare parts bin just in case, they didnt look that bad and I can probably use in emergency if need be or for a fellow Cayenne owner.

I did burn my hand somewhere on the engine, when I was 14-16 I worked at a pizza restaurant and I guess it helped deaden my nerves, as I didnt feel any real pain but the fingers are all bubbled up now..
