My 2004 Cayenne S is one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. If properly maintained and updated, they're great. The problem is that many owners didn't take the time to properly maintain and update them. Be careful in your selection, and you'll be fine.

$10k a year? The known problems are coolant pipes, cardan shaft and coils. If all 3 went bad in one year it isn't that much.
Stay away, stay far away from that dealership.

Dealer speak.......with side notes
dont worry, you dont need to spend 10k(maybe 5k to bring it up to par) on a 20k vehicle, I have a nice new 2011 S here for 70k and you just need to finance it .

Run, don't walk away from the P!g!!
I would also disagree (sorry Dennis) that the problem with P!gs are maintenance. I think, at least first generation, that they are fundamental design and quality control issues. I obsess over every detail with my P!gs, often with a money is no object approach (except cheap tires), and no, I mean NO, vehicle has been a greater disappointment to own.
It's like a bad relationship...sure there are some hot, fun times, but most the time you feel like driving her to some bad street in Detroit to leave her for dead.

I guess it must vary from vehicle to vehicle. I believe it's getting updates and TSBs done too, not just maintenance. To me, this points out the need for full service history and records when buying a used Cayenne. It sounds like some are good, and some are not. Mine was a late build 2004 (built in May of 2004), so perhaps that partly explains it.

Funny that I just scheduled a service appointment for the Cayenne right after I posted in this thread... but it's just routine maintenance - nothing unplanned.

If you've spent any time poking around here, you already know what the most common problems are, and how hard or expensive they are to fix. The standard number seems to be $5k. If you can afford $5k in miscellaneous repair work over the next few years - in addition to the cost of the note and the regular maintenance costs (and don't forget about the gas!) - then go for it.
