Navi lacks detail on many rural roads
Hey guys,
Long time posted in the 996 forum. New here.
So, I recently took delivery of a 2011 CTT. The car is superb, literally, in every way. Very please and much impressed with PCM. One question though, what do I have to do in order to add more granular detail to roads. While I live in NY, I was up in Vermont (Stratton) and Navi didn't pick up a LOT of the roads that I was driving on...even when I zoomed in. It was peculiar because most of them were pretty noteworthy routes like 30 and 100. Do I have to download a map for that region? Dealer effort or can I do it myself?
Thanks in advance,

This is why I would never buy a built-in nav system...
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going lick the back of the suction cup, slap it on the windscreen and my $50 investment and I are going to hit the road!

I just had the head unit in my 996 replaced with an aftermarket unit from Kenwood. Aftermarket units are generally quite a bit better at navigation than OEM systems, at least in Porsches. I also use the Tom Tom app on my iPhone when I travel, and it's better than most of the aftermarket in-dash systems. It updates automatically with new maps, it has real time traffic data and automatically re-routes you if necessary, it has a lane display which is great.
Back to the original question - I'm not sure what to say. I would expect a 2011 car to have the most up to date maps available, but I don't know. It's a sensitive issue for those of us who had (or still have) PCM 2.0 with CD-based maps in our Gen 1 Cayennes.

hey now, I won't have a word said against mine (its still working, do not want to tempt fate) Agree on the Tom Tom iPhone app tho, it always gets me there even if it has tense arguments with the PCM

Ours actually still works pretty well too. My wife wants it updated to add bluetooth and Sirius, but the nav works fine ever since the 2008 update (The new phonebook is here! The new phonebook is here!).

I'm thinking of the Bumperplugs iPod update. Did you look at that? I have the Sirius FM conversion already.

I'll have to take a look. Since mine is an early PCM 2.0 unit (no "phone" button), I'm not sure it it would work. I'll take a look.
Edit: I just talked to Eric at Bumper Plugs. It won't work - at least not the way I want it to work.

Dennis, mine works with the Mobridge but you would have to use early firmware not the latest, i use the iphone to dial and answer because no phone buttons, but the BT and Sirius work great thru it
