OK just drove my sorta new 2010 Jeep SRT8 from Chicago back to NY. Tell me again why we own Cayennes??

I vote, in any order: resale value, fuel consumption and superior engineering.

 

I have had a few GC over the years -- I think the early ones were built better -- at least I liked them better.

They all had great transmissions and the top all wheel drive set up was first rate.

Not as fun to drive as the Cayenne.

 

Put 100k miles on the Jeep and tell me how tight the interior is vs. the Cayenne.
Or, put the Jeep into a few corners vs. a Cayenne and see how it compares.
Or, take the Jeep off-road..... Oh, wait, that's right it can't.

The Jeep is a great straight-line vehicle. If that is what you want, then cool.

I bought my GTS from a gent who owned a Chrysler dealership. The deal was made with his sales manager who drove a Cherokee SRT8. When I went back to pick up the GTS, the mgr looked me in the eye and told me that he test drove my car around the block and NOW he understood what the hype was on the Cayenne. He was floored...

I'll give a serious answer. I've had 2 Grand Cherokees and 11 Jeeps total for 4wheeling rigs. I looked at the GC SRT8 and decided the following.

The GC solid rear axle suspension does not ride or handle as well as a complete independent setup. It's also only available in steel spring, no air suspension.

The SRT8 only has a 3,500 lb towing capacity and no way to actually add a hitch with the center exit exhaust. The 7,800LB capacity of the Cayenne with a load leveling air bag suspension will tow my race car where the GC won't.

No 4x4 in a Jeep??? That is just wrong!!!!!! The Cayenne will at least do some nice backroad travel.

The motor in the SRT8 is a wonderful example of 1960's engineering with fuel injection. Nifty, but I want something a little more refined in its power delivery and fuel consumption. I also live at altitude so a turbo motor keeps its power here MUCH better than a na old school V8.

The quality of the interior and overall build is just much better on the Cayenne. There are a million little options and touches the GC just does not get.

 

I just drove a similar trip, salt lake to seattle and back.
the cayenne was an absolute pleasure to drive, whether thru the speed trap-traffic clogged states of oregon and washington(65-75 mph) or the mini autobahn of southern idaho northern utah(steady 100 mph) I didn't get tired, worn out or bored. in fact this was the first time in 10 years I didn't have to stop for a short nap.
makes me glad I own a cayenne. and for those that are interested, on board computer showed 16.9 mpg for the entire trip.

on the gc srt8 note, saw one on the local streets while on the left coast. I happen to be in the passenger seat of a very impressive m3 when the gc srt8 driver let us know he had a hot rod.
we caught up and ask about his truck; chipped, exhaust and lowered. he loved it and couldn't have been happier with it.
sounded and looked great, and that is what jeep built. not an off road capable suv but a street hot rod, thus the Street and Racing Technology(SRT) designation. not a bad little niche market.

 

Anyone who has ever owned a Chrysler product knows the answer to that question...

The P!g was always a VW product...both by labor and content.

Still a bad "Porsche" is still better than a good Chrysler product.

Yes but very partially. Simultaneous engineering by both VAG & PAG went into the design of the Touareg/Cayenne platform. The body, trim and innards are painted and assembled on the same ***'y line as the VW Touareg in the VW Bratislava, Slovakia plant. The assembled bodies are then shipped via train to the Porsche ***'y plant in Leipzig, East Germany (oops...did I say east?) where the remaining undercarriage, powerplant and finishing details are installed; hence the 'Made in Germany' label. But I'm sure you knew that already...
