Default What tools needed to service??

Today I replaced the serpentine belt to address a brief squawk sound at startup. The noise only happens when the engine is cold.

Not a difficult task once all the pastic crap is removed.

BTW all the pulleys are pastic as well.

Since the pulleys spin freely and the belt did not fix the noise...my next best guess is the starter. Since there is a lift in my garage this will be a DIY repair.

It appears that most of the engine fasteners are torx...I would like to purchase a set for future repairs.

What is needed?

Searched...lots of info on other Porsche models but not the Cayenne.

You might want to check out the thread at the top on "coolant pipes". Larry points out in #5 about the interesting location of the starter.

THANKS!!

Looks like Porsche did not consider serviceabilty with this engine design. I have never seen a starter under the intake.

What were they thinking?

Well, the old school air cool 911s starter location is not any better either.
Take a look at this DIY http://p-car.com/diy/starter/
Probably take just as long to repalce as a Cayenne. The 996 + are not bad as the start is on top, just need to removed the alternator to get to it.

If, for any reason, you are "in there" replacing a starter, MAKE SURE you replace the plastic coolant tubes while you are still "in there".

That's OK, try and guess what the starter looks like in the Cayenne Hybrid.

Thanks everyone!!!

Ordered a Bosch remanufactured starter...$200 plus an $80 core charge. The supplier called Saturday to say that it is out of stock and that my payment was being refunded.

Good thing because it was not the cause of the noise. Turns out that one of the lines going to the underside of the intake splitter was contacting the waterpump pulley. When the engine was warm it must have moved away just enough so that the noise was not present.

Off the hook for a major repair...at least for now.
