Default Winter Tire Question

I have an '06 Cayenne Turbo S. In the summer I run 22' Techarts with 285/35-22's. For the winter I run the stock 20" wheels. The last two winters I ran Pirelli Scorpions in the vehicles stock size of 275/40-20. I think they are still too fat for the snow. I want to keep the 20" wheels and was looking for a narrower tire option. Has anyone tried a 255 on the stock 20" wheels? I was thinking of trying Blizzak LM-60 in 255/45-20. Overall diameter is about right. Just wasn't sure if they are too narrow for the wheel. Obviously won't look as cool as the wider tire but I think they'd be better in the snow. I appreciate your opinions.
Thanks.

If it were me, I would go with 19's to get a narrower footprint in the white stuff.

Ran the Blizzaks after a finding a gently used set for sale. Never had a better performing, quieter, and longer lasting winter tire.

What tire pressures did you run in the Blizzaks?

I am wondering the same as I have a set of 20s on now, am looking for snow tires now and plan to upgrade to 22s for summer. Reviewing sizes and brand now.

I ran the 275/40-20 Scorpions the last two winters and wasn't impressed. I think it's the width more than the tire manufacturer. Fat tires don't do well in snow and ice. For that reason I want to try 255/45-20's this year. I just have to make sure they are wide enough for our OEM 20" wheels. According to Tire Racks website 255's will fit a rim from 8-9.5" wide. I will have to check the width of my OEM 20" OEM rims.

IIRC OEM 20's are 9" wide, the 21's are 10". Can confirm through Wheelenhancement.com's site.

Correct. For the cost, an inexpensive 18" wheel and a 235 or 255 Winter tire will provide you far better traction than a 275/20 will.

Damon, what do you recommend for winter tire pressures?

Look at the Nokians for a winter tire.

I too have a turbo-s and it limits your wheel options with the front brakes. I wish I could use 18" rims, but I couldn't find any to clear the brakes. Damon from tirerack hooked me up with a set of 275/45R-20 Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 XL for my stock 20" rims. I haven't tried them yet as it hasn't started with the white stuff in PA yet.

I also have a turbo S and Monday a set of techart 22 inch wheels with pirelli all season tires will be going on the truck. How good or bad do people think this setup will be in the NJ/NY winter conditions. There is no dedicated 22 inch snow tire I could find as I would prefer to leave the new techart wheels on all yr round so my backup plan if the wheel tire combo is not good enough is to put back on the stock 21 inch wheels with pirelli scorpion snow and ice.

I have two 18" wheels in stock that will clear the Turbo S calipers. The Rial Oslo, and the OZ Canyon ST.

On just all-seasons it's going to be average on cold dry days, and worthless in the snow. Also, make sure the Techart has no polished or machined surfaces because the elements will eat them.
