While we are on the subject of tires......

I just ordered some 295X45X20 for my technos. Has anyone ever gone this wide/tall? I want the widest tire I can put on this thing and that is what Discount Tire said I could go with. They are the Hankook Ventus. $170 each.

Mine were from TireRack too. Damon indicated they were a very popular tire so I suspect the price went up (just a guess).

Thats funny those are the same tires i had planned on using on our Cayenne shortly. I went with them because on tirerack.com they had the best rating for Noise. Congrats on your wheels.

How wide are your wheels?

Your Hankooks are going to be around 30.5" tall = (295*.45)2/25.4+20 Please post pics when get them. I'm interested to see how such a tall tire looks on the Cayenne.

My GTS came with the stock 21s, so they are (295*.35)2/25.4+21 = ~29.13" tall (Yokohama says 29" even). I'm running 19s in the winter, which are (275*.45)2/25.4+19 = ~28.75" tall (Continental says 28.7"). Both are Porsche OEM sizes.

There was a post and discussion about 45's on the rear with technos. Remember OEM technos are 20x10 in the rear and 20x9 in the front so I don't think 45s will work up front.

With that said, I have the Ventus on my technos in the OEM size and they are okay. I am going to try the Yokos talked about above next. I don't like the balancing issues and splashy-ness of the Hankooks (particularly in rain).

Mine are 275/45 - 20 on 20 x 9's all the way around. There's plenty of clearance for the 45's. I suspect the 295/45's will do fine on the 20 x 10's. You can always call Damon and ask. He gave me the option of 275/40 or 275/45's for my setup. The 45's did affect the speedo just slightly, it now reads 1 or 2 under what my GPS says I'm doing, but I can account for that.

I find that interesting since the 40s look almost too wide for the front 20x9 rim. I actually didn't think a 45 would fit but it looks like it can. Probably really hangs over the rim...

I think you may have it backwards, the 40 (or 45) is the aspect ratio which is the distance from the outer edge of the rim to the outer edge of the tire tread, the 45 will be a taller tire than the 40's. The 275 vs 295 is the width of the tire, a 10" wide rim would have a easier time w/ a 295 than the 9" wide rim, that's the measurement that would affect how far a tire "hangs over the rim". IIRC

See Tirerack Tech page.

My bad...P!g ownership causes all sorts of confusion and dementia.

I did read it wrong somewhere else and was all confused esp bc this thread I thought was referring to how wide you could go (who'd want a taller tire - seems kinda goofy).

As a side note, clutch-n-throttle put 315's on the rear of his sport technos (that's what I was originally thinking of - DUH) and they looked awesome but I don't think you could do that on the front. I'd attach a link to that thread but I'm not that sharp (as you know).

Each manufacturer will spec a tire size for a certain wheel width range. It's always best to check with the manufacturer's specs on the exact tire/wheel combo you're looking to use.

As far as tire size, the 2nd number, 40 or 45 in this case, is the aspect ratio. The ratio of height to width. So a 275/40 19 would have a sidewall that is 40% of the width of the tire.

I see, so by using 295/45 the tire may have the same actual height as 275/40 tire but will be slightly wider. That makes sense...again, being the point of wanting a wider tire (not really a taller one).

But 295 is still wider than a 275 so it will, to my earlier point, hang over the rim more than the 275 already does on the 20x9 rim.

Getting closer.

A 295/45 20 is going to be wider and taller than a 275/40 20. 45% of 295mm is a lot more than 40% of 275mm.

(295*.45)2/25.4+20 = approx 30.45" tall
(275*.40)2/25.4+20 = approx 28.66" tall

Yes. Personally, I wouldn't run a 295 on anything smaller than a 10" wheel. I think the 9" wheel is too narrow, but guy with the Hankooks should check with the manufacturer to see what they say.

Pinching a tire on to a rim that's too narrow is asking for premature wear, possible handling issues and cosmetically, it looks like ****.
