I'm on my third set of horns now. I had to honk at a car over the weekend and I was quite surprised that it actually worked! There's nothing worse than angrily honking at some idiot and having it sound like a clown car just tooted at him.

Just returned yesterday from the SEMA show where Hella (German mfr of lighting and automotive electrical systems) had a booth with a front clip from a '08+ Cayenne on display.
The clip (less the front bumper skin) had the headlamps and horns shown in their respective locations along with the wiring harnesses and OEM plug connectors. There is very little wire slack to cut the OEM connector in order to crimp on a std wire connector and install aftermarket horns. It's obvious that this was done to prevent swapping the OEM's with generic aftermarket units. Unfortunately, I had my camera however no pics were allowed inside SEMA.
I managed to grab hold of a Hella rep and told him that the horns fill up with water and asked him why the horns fail so early? He told me that this is a mfr-related issue as far as component placement on the vehicle goes and not a quality-related issue. What he did recommend (indirectly) was to swap the horns with their other disc-type model. I've shown pictures of both horns that I downloaded from Hella's website.
There are two typical trumpet-like horns on the Cayenne (low and high tone) that are mounted on the front crossmember just behind the grille. Ideally, one can swap-out the trumpet horns for the disc horns provided that ample wire is available to reach the new horn connector. A future project no doubt...

The same rationale behind VIN specific wiring harnesses.
Or you're right, it was a conspiracy against customers after all.

The 4" long pigtailed wire loom that stems from the harness is stretched taut onto the crossmember and plugs directly into the horn. Typically, I doubt that the horn can be removed unless the connector is first unplugged. Perhaps it's simply bad engineering?

Will answer my own question.
Alarm horn is 75 bucks. Don't really care about the alarm but I'm **** and like everything to work on my cars so I guess I am ordering one.
