Default Vibration @80 mph +

Completely love my 04s except that I have noticed a vibration as soon as I hit 80 mph and above. Everything is fine under 80 mph, but like clock work it starts vibrating exactly at 80. It seems to be coming from the drive train not the steering wheel. Could it be the cardon shaft that has been talked about in the past? I'm thinking it's not tire balancing because everything is great up to 80. Any thoughts or has anyone else been through this?

My '05 had this issue and it turned out to be tire balancing.

To isolate the prob, rotate your tires and see if you feel it more through the steering wheel. Then you know it was a rear tire that moved to the front.

You may have a hard time having a dealer help you as the issue occurs above posted speed limits.

Can't help with the Cardan shaft diagnosis.

HTH,
Scott

I haven't experienced the cardan shaft issue with my Cayenne, but from what I've read it seems to happen at lower speeds than 80 mph, and it seems to feel like more of a drivetrain issue as you describe than a tire/steering issue. I haven't heard anybody mention a cardan shaft issue at that speed.

FWIW, my Cayenne is rock solid, even over 80 mph.

Have the tires road force balanced. Don't believe it when people tell you it isn't necessary. On these vehicles it is.

This kind of vibration at highway speeds was common on early Cayennes and, from what I have seen, it has almost always been attributable to issues with the tires. To cut to the chase, I would guess that you are running the N-spec Pirelli tires and that is the root of your problem. The Pirelli Scorpions on my past 04 CS were garbage and after paying for rebalancing 2 times without any improvement, I trashed them with 50% tread remaining. Went with 22" Toyos and never had a problem again. In other posts, it seems that the Pireelis are more often than not the problem. So, what tires are you running?

My Michelin Diamaris have been great. Rock solid well over 80.

Thanks for the info. I am running Yoko Parada on 20" factory rims. Purchased the tires from Tirerack earlier this summer and had them installed from one of there local authorized installers. I had 18" oem conti's before and did not notice the problem. I guess I can try and get them balanced again and see if that does the trick.

In my area, the only roadforce machine is at... you guessed it... the Porsche dealer. Makes for cheap tire balancing.

I would agree with the comments on this though, it is a good thing.

Road force balancing preferably on a hunter machine will do the trick. Drive shaft effects lower speeds around 45.

Always ask for a copy of the road force balance report sheet (pre and post balance).

Thanks guys, I will get it done soon.

What good is the report? Can't I trust my dealer?

+3, Hunter road force balancing is the way to go. You do not necessarily have to go to the dealership. Go to the following site and enter your location and the site will tell you where the nearest Hunter machine resides:

http://www.gsp9700.com/pub/features/how.cfm

Also, not that it always really matters, but I'm not sure that the Yoko Parada tires are Porsche spec for the Cayenne.

I had the problem on an '06 Turbo S. Started after installing 20" snow tires. After five different balancings, it turned out the tires were bad. My problem started at 75 with a slight steering wheel shake.
