Default CEL Light caused by low fuel?

Gents,

Curious to get your thoughts on this one. I am evaluating the purchase of a Cayenne TT and drove the vehicle last weekend. I noticed the CEL light on and the vehicle was low on fuel as well. The sales person (no surprise) is trying to tell me that the CEL light "It was on because the car was low on gas for a while."

This sounds like BS to me. It would seem to me that there would be a low fuel light illuminated only. Thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks

Cheers

Greg

IMO, yes it is possible. Although, I think there some actual Porsche techs on here that can override my opinion. Your fuel system is part of the overall emissions control and weird things CAN happen if you run really low on fuel. If you remedy the situation with the tank, the light may go out after a few cycles, but if you have them reset it, get them to look at the code and see if there could be association with the CEL and a low fuel condition. If something sounds fishy, there are lots of other Cayennes to buy, if it makes you feel safer. Personally, if I got the light to go out and loved the car, I would take it for a couple of days and do a bunch of driving cycles on it and if the thing was good to go and I had a warranty, I would buy it.

What year is this and what is the warranty situation?

Thanks HD. I believe the vehicle must be out of warranty as it is a 2004.

It depends on the delivery date. My 2004 is covered by the factory warranty until October of this year because it was purchased in October of 2004. I have only 42,000 miles on it, so it isn't over on mileage either.

I would be worried about the CEL also. Is this a Porsche dealer that is telling you this is caused by the low fuel situation?

A CEL would cause a fault code.
One sure answer is to read the fault code(s) or pending fault codes.

Low fuel causes p0300 code random misfire, see it all the time on cars on the lot and when they pull them into service fuel guage is at or below the "E" on the fuel guage.
