Default Pre-purchase research

Hi All,

I've been a front-engine V-8 Porsche owner since 01/00 with the purchase of my '89 928GT. My lovely drives a '95 BMW 540 which is getting a little long in the tooth. I asked her what she wanted as a replacement and she said a Cayenne; atta girl!

So now I'm researching the Cayenne. I saw the JD Powers report on the various years and it looks like the vehicle to buy is an '06 or better.

I'm looking for a used vehicle with low miles. I've seen some '04s and '05s at ok prices. Should I stay away? Are there issues that need to be addressed prior to purchase?

Any advice as to where to go is welcome; well almost any.

Thanks

John,

If you dig around a little more on this board you'll find the common issues. Among them are coils, cardan shafts and others. Your safest bet is to avoid a 2003 or 2004 model. That being said, there are some good 2004s and some bad 2005s, but I think the general consensus is that they get better as they get newer. If you get a 2006 model, your chances of a trouble-free experience are improved vs. a 2005.

If you choose to go with a deal on a 2004 or 2005 model, be sure to get as much information as possible on the car, including the service history. Who knows - maybe you'll get one of the good ones. Also, if the major issues have been addressed already, then it should be good for a while.

I've got a 2004 Cayenne S, and overall I've been happy with it. It has had a few minor issues, especially in the last week or so, but overall it hasn't been bad.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I was looking for. I'll spend a little extra and get the '05 or later.

I see you have my boy SRV in your avitar. Must be good omen.

Cheers,

I'm a big fan of SRV also. I considered this one for the avatar too, and may switch to it after a while...

Out of respect for SRV (saw him live at Newport Jazz Festival), I will NOT unleash Larry's squirrels on the newbie.....Cayenne ownership will be punishment enough.

As a past recipient of a minor squirrel attack, I'm sure he appreciates it.

It was more of a minor squirrel action, rather than a full blown Larry squirrel attack.
THAT is reserved for a select, yet highly deserving, few.
