Question falling liftgate

The liftgate in my '04 CS has a bad case of erectile dysfunction. Since I can't seem to convince my urologist to prescribe viagra for my car, I'm looking for an alternative solution. Gate just won't stay up; hits me in the back everytime I'm in there. I'm guessing a new strut?? Anyone else been down this road?

Yep. Twice. Not an uncommon problem with the earlier models. Mine would stay up in warm weather and not in cold weather. Porsche changed the strut design. I believe they are now air-compressed, previously I want to say glass of some sort. Too long ago to really remember. No problems since. Luckily covered under warranty.

This hit me too. I only had one set of replacements.

The last time I brought up it up they noted that it did that in cold weather. I see from Blade’s comment that I’m going to have to question them again on this.

If any of you starts to sing "viva viagra" to get your rear hatch to stay up, I'm doing a seance and telling Larry to unleash the squirrels..

Had mine done once - seemed fine in the summer, once winter hit the struts suck again. Going to try to get them to replace them again.
I love how Porsche replaces a defective part with another defective part...unreal.

I think you and Poker are on to something. Using Viagra in the problem description should certainly entertain the tech. That will at the least keep it on their radar.

Agreed but they’re not alone in doing this. I can think of two parts that Mercedes must know are defective on first generation MLs. In one case I’ve had the part replaced three times across different vehicles.

At least my Mercedes service reps tell me when it’s a problem they see often and that the replacement part also gets replaced. Maybe it’s just a case of the Cayenne (still) being too young?

How many times have you had the coils replaced on your Cayenne?

+1. Same here.

Have had the same problem with the piston that returns the parking brake pedal. What company supplies these things - Mattel?

To my knowledge never...I purchased it used this summer and had the stealer check everything including the coils and was told they are the correct part#

I am dealing with that one right now...mine also has some stripped plastic teeth (imagine that) that makes it jump while applying the parking break.

I had mine done once under warranty and they didnt connect on right . We were unloading groceries and that hatch came down like a gulliotine very scary. They fixed that and its needing replacement again as its saggy in cold weather.

Just cleaning out receipts for tax season and came across the one for the lift gate:
Part no. 955-512-550-03 was the Gas-Filled Strut used to replace the previous glass struts which failed twice.

Default cargo woes

when customer of mine complain about the hatch falling down, i replace the glass window strut and the cargo door strut. there are two pairs of struts that hold the door open. both can be replaced if the car is still under warranty for free. hope that helps

Many vehicles, of all makes, have had this issue.

Stiff O-rings can equal leakage.

Hell, they couldn't get that right on the NASA's Challenger.

HUGE news, and very intriguing! Just go and have the struts replaced.

Default Failing rear hatch struts

Can I replace these myself? It appears that I will have to remove interior side panels. Does anyone know of a previous DIY outline for the replacement?

Unfortunatley I am out of warranty and would rather do it myself that be robbed by the dealer.

The are in the roof, you can diy but you need to securely support the tailgate as it is very heavy
