Default Want Used Turbo - What to look 4?

I'm looking to get a used Turbo. I know little to nothing about the Cayenne, other than I want one, mod it up a bit, and try to spend as little money as possible. All this, of course, while getting the best of everything!

Is there anything that should be avoided, due to model year? Did all years have that interesting active roll bar system? Is there any value in the newer, more powerful models that an ECU tune couldn't replicate?

I need serious help. I would like to be a buyer ASAP.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Mike ----------- there is this really cool function on the forum.. search.. and it looks at previously done threads and pulls up all the info in the world about Cayennes. mods (we've done that).. little to nothing knowledge (we've educated many).. spend as little as possible (we've saved guys/gals thousands).. anything to avoid (we've done that 'ad nauseum')...
MODEL YEAR??? that's when I lost it... does alpha or beta mean anything??? RTFT or STFF .... please so that Larry's ghost doesn't "rain on your parade"?! Lastly.. all "kidding aside" -- come on in.. the water is warm.. the forum drink is purple.. the sarcasm is at an all time high.. and the Cayenne availabilty is ALWAYS good.

Amen from any of the brethren?

+1 on the amen too.

I've had no regrets with my '04 CTT purchase. I'm the 2nd owner. It is still under warranty so I've been taking care of this and that (coils, TSBs, lower control arm). I'm sure there are some real deals out there now especially since the 2nd generation has hit the streets.

Every time I drive my vehicle, I'm amazed what it can do ... and do it well.

Best of luck.

"...as little money as possible" sounds like a blank check to me.

Turbos come from the factory pretty nicely equipped, and with impressive power. You may find that you need fewer mods than you think.

Dig around here on the forums and you should be able to narrow your search down based on what you read... I think you'll find that most people will recommend a 2005 or newer model.

Thanks, although I'm not sure you know me well enough to comment on my power needs. My Suburban, that the new CTT will replace has 880 TQ at the wheels. My car is GT700, soon to be 3.8L conversion. You get the idea.

I've read the 2005+ comments here. Thanks for that. Interestingly, low mile Turbo "S" in the US cost about the same as mid-mile (2005-06) turbo here in Canada.

The Turbo S was only available in 2006, comparing it to the non-S Turbo, it has bigger brakes and "I think" bigger turbos or intercoolers. The active roll bar system is the PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control), this is only available from 2008 (the facelifted version). I doubt you will find too many used 2008 to choose from and if you do, it will not be cheap.

Thanks! Thtat's too bad about the PDCC. It sounds very interesting for a heavy vehicle.

I have started to look a little at 06 TT's. I found one that I know the owner, dealer wants $69k Decent options and full leather. Mileage is about 16k miles. They will CPO the car which is good. The only kicker is what they will give me for my 05 CS...$31k. The delta is closer to $40k and I would like to get it closer to $30k.

Since I got spanked pretty good on my 05 CS. Is it remotely possible that the TT's will hold a little more of their value. Is it possible they will hold above $45k.

Hmm, as an owner of an 05'CTT, even despite your love affair with torque and horsepower, I am not sure this is a car (truck) you want to start fiddling with in the terms of major HP upgrades. If your idea of HP boosts is just buying a chip/changing exhaust and turning up the boost on the engine, I think you are asking for major problems. First, if I had to pick a weak link in the Cayenne, its going to be the transmission. While the engine is smooth and nice (burns a hell of a lot of oil), the tranny is not smooth and quirky. I cannot imagine how it would handle another couple 100 hp/pounds o torque.

Further, if your buying an 06', your paying for a warranty that you will most certainly void with any upgrade work. Once you throw in that chip and blow coils, coolant line, tranny, the prospects of getting your dealer to eat the fix it costs are pretty low. In all the time I owned a visibly heavily modded C4, I NEVER was asked or questioned about after market conversions to my car, on warranty claims. However with the CTT, I have been questioned several times and even want as far as getting a letter from my dealer that states that removing the secondary cats and exhaust, wouldn't void anything. I was however warned and told that I should keep the stock cats, "just in case...".

Given the big v8 and the twin turbos, and space to work, initially the CTT looks like a tuners HP dream, but I think think once you crack it open, its not something you want to mess with. I would say find a TTS and call its a day.
