How to activate the Porsche Sim card phone
hey guys i have an 06' cayenne with the nav unit and everything. and it even has the tray for the sim card. but when i put the sim in nothing happens so i was wondering how would i go about making this unit work... is it just a little programing thing or do i need to buy some more parts?

Mine has the slot too but requires additional parts to make it work. It's been awhile but i think it was something like $1200-$1300 parts alone so I didn't get it... If you still have the MSRP sticker, check to see if yours have that option.

yap
i talked to a dealer they think it just need to be activated, and they said it should be somewhere around $200-500.
and then i had another dealer tell me that it will need more parts and it could cost up to $1000 to get it all working.
i just keep getting all the mixed up ans from all different dealer. one is lower then another. so i dont know who to trust. because i dont want them to start the work and the give me a $2000 bill. when i can go out and get a blue tooth setup for like $500-600.

I am assuming you don't have the MSRP sticker anymore so you do not know if the optional module is in there or not. If I were you , contact Porsche North America. Give them your VIN and see if they have a record of it. It's better to go to the dealership knowing what you want instead of having someone to tell you what you need after they took out the stereo and who knows what else...

Unless you have the factory option called "Phone Module for PCM" (currently option code 9W1 - it may have a different designation for MY2006 - I don't have a PET CD for 2006 yet), you cannot simply have the dealer "activate" the GSM service. This module is the absolute pre-requisite for GSM service via the PCM in your Cayenne.
If you have the option, insert your GSM SIM card (if you're in the US, the only big, national GSM providers are AT&T and T-Mobile) into the tray and you are in business. Note that the module is likely to be a tri-band (900/1800/1900 Mhz) version of a GSM phone and NOT a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 Mhz) version. I can't remember exactly, but I'm reasonably certain that these phones are tri-band only, not quad-band.
:HISTORY LESSON ON:900/1800/1900 Mhz are the standard frequencies used for GSM originally, but Cingular was driving their GSM network to the 850Mhz band, thus the quad-band moniker. Because of this drive to 850Mhz (for better in-building reception), if you are an AT&T GSM customer your coverage will NOT be as good as that for T-Mobile. This is not a plug for T-Mobile, rather the simple realities of the drive by AT&T Wireless (as a result of the SBC/AT&T/Bell South/Cingular combination) to migrate the vast majority of its current cellular operations to the 850Mhz band. Their plan going forward is to use the 1900Mhz band (the old PCS band back in the early days of digital cellular service) for the uplink channel of HSUPA. European GSM carriers still rely on 900/1800 Mhz for service along with 2100Mhz for WCDMA.
:HISTORY LESSON OFF:
The only reason this matters is if you are an AT&T Wireless customer, your coverage will NOT be as good as what your get on your AT&T handset. In fact, you will sometimes see signal on your AT&T handset where you get ZERO bars on the PCM Phone. That is evidence that you just wandered into a cell where AT&T is only providing 850Mhz coverage.
Oh, and don't ask about multiple SIM cards tied to a single phone number...... The US GSM carriers couldn't figure out how to enhance their Siebel CRM systems to allow for this "feature". Nevermind that this is a staple of GSM operators everywhere else in the world!

I am going to have Larry's remains dug up and his reincarnated soul brought back as a squirrel.....which will immediately run up the pantleg and steal the nuts off of the next person who mentions Bluetooth.
