Default Advice: Cell reception vs. Thermally Insulated Glass

I am about to finalize an order for Basalt Black CS and would like to have the Thermally Insulated Glass to reduce heat build-up. However, the dealer warned about the possibility of reduced cell phone reception.

Does anyone living in the San Francisco Bay Area using Cingular/ATT celluar service have any experience with the Thermally Insulated Glass in their Cayenne?

Thanks for you help.

I would STRONGLY recommend getting the integrated phone option and maybe sat radio. To install after the matter is a real PITA. I have the insulated glass option and my cell phone seems to work fine here in NYC. Radar detectors are bit less effective. Though if you mount the radar above the rear view mirror, there appears to be a gap in the insulated glass.

I have the insulated glass and use Cingular in South Carolina... There is definitely a reduction in the signal strength in the vehicle, but it is slight at best... less than one "bar". I know this because I drive the same roads in my Jetta and maintain conversations where I drop them (sometimes) in the Cayenne.

I will also vouch for the thermal glass' effectiveness! It definitely keeps the vehicle cooler in summer!

I was a lot of help... right?!

Default Radar?

I have the "PJ1 Thermally Insulated Glass" option on a Cayenne and the Verizon and Cingular cell phones work just as poorly inside the car as out. : )

The hand held ADT remote and garage door opener doesn't work unless I "point" it at a gap in the driver's door or window down the window -- that's really annoying.

But Radar -- that's another story. It basically doesn't work at all. Useless front and rear regardless of the location.

Which external radar detector works best?

I have the K40 and it sucks. I also have a radar that I wedge above my rear view mirror, that seems to work. The K40 is located too low, to really be effective

I won't be caught speeding with a K40, because I will never purchase one.

I didn't purchase one directly, it came with the car. The best part is that the prior owner must of really valued it, as they didn't even tell the dealer about it and they suggested replacing it when I asked the dealer to ask the prior owner about the unit.

As I said above, it SUCKs. Not even close to the performance of the Escort or V1.

That said, I was thinking that I might just have an older model, but after seeing this, there is zero chance I would ever buy a K40 product. I wish Escort would update their built in unit, the SRX (or something like that). It was ok, 4 years ago...

Default ...more "thermal" versus cell...

Thanks, Michael S. and Carrera GT for your replies.

I would like the positive effect of the thermal glass (much less heat in the summer in a black car). But I use my Blackberry phone extensively in my other cars for business (996, BMW, Aston) and don't want to experience a significant increase in dropped calls in the Cayenne.

I would appreciate hearinf from others with annecdontal experiences with the thermal glass and cell phones.

Thanks.

It occurs to me, I also have the Verizon cellular broadband data card for the laptop I use in the Cayenne -- data bandwidth is seemingly the same as when in other cars. The only areas I've seen it impact performance is radar and garage door type remotes. I like the thermal for the privacy factor and it keeps the UV and Sun heat 100% off the kids and dogs whereas the roll-up sunscreen option is just a partial block (and a tempting play-thing for the kids ...)

I'll solve the radar problem by putting a V1 outside the cabin at the front and the rear and using the remotes for audio and visual alerts.

I'll solve the garage door opener problem by using the built-in coder in the car, but it might require some fiddling to get the ADT thing to work.

I too have had no signifcant issues using my BB with my CTT and thermal glass. I did notice that garage door openers and wireless interest were reduced as my BB has the wireless capability with WiFi and it was virtually useless in the car in the garage.

My only concern is using the radar (Bel RX65). I mounted it above the mirror and did pick up a signal once but a unsure if it's working through the glass.

Cell phone is probably a little flakier in poor coverage areas; and remote openers seem to be a little less responsive - but that may be more a function of the home link.
